I'm still alive as well. Thanks for all the thoughts about me! Haha!
The company I work for put out an "everyone who can do your job remotely must do so now" order a week before the State of California did (so March 12th or so). So I've been working from home the whole time. Oddly, without so many distractions in the office, I'm actually able to get a lot more of the harder code based projects done really fast now. The funny thing about this is that I'd been in a running discussion/debate with my management chain about work schedule requirements, specifically that the new senior manager my group got put into is one of those "I want to visually see my people sitting at their desks from X to Y time, with no variations". I've been a salaried employee with mostly project based workload that doesn't have any specific time requirements (I can code at 3 in the morning as well as 1 in the afternoon). Since we do have some needs to be physically close to the equipment we ultimately support, my team had spread out our hours to maximize coverage, with one guy coming in from 7 to 3, another from 9 to 5, and me from 11 to 7. This allowed us a 12 hour coverage day, giving us some time before and after engineering shift time to make adjustments software updates, etc (stuff that requires folks to not be on the equipment, so best to do in the gaps between shifts). Also allowed me to reduce my rush hour commute time too. Of course, the new manager was insistent that this didn't work, reduced efficiency, etc, etc etc.
Funny thing is that our department has done audits of work completions since the work from home order and the productivity has increased by somewhere around 20%. So, um.... Maybe there's something to this whole telecommute thing. Also, have only put gas in my big honking V8 once in the last 3 months, which is completely insane. Pretty much just drive to the grocery store once or twice a week and that's it.
Also the brewing competitions we were entered in got cancelled, and our beer and cider not returned. Instead they used the alcohol to make hand sanitizer or something. So there's me contributing!
