Not like Abyssea NMs were original, either. Mostly just reskins.
Many of them exhibited behaviors that were completely different from mobs outside Abyssea, though, making them more unique even if using the same models. Even though he's a simple mob, there still isn't anything like Briareus outside of Abyssea, for instance. At least, until Cottus, who from what I've seen is almost the exact same mob.

I don't really understand peoples' animosity towards Voidwatch. I personally enjoy it. After all, it's completely designed around what the playerbase has been asking for: no spawn timers, repetitive popping, anybody can participate and throw together a group, and the drop system is based around that with personal pools so there's no competition. I'm willing to bet that most people who complain about the drops are people who didn't bother to cap red and blue lights and didn't bother to spam the fight. It's really not that bad; I've gotten quite a few nice drops. If people think it should be easier to get the high-tier drops, they obviously don't remember what this game's drop rates and competition used to be like.
I've tried it and gotten nothing but some cruor, potions, gems, and rocks for my trouble. Also, even for the groups that actually bother with this event enough to get good loot, people have already talked about the problems there; mainly the people who already have or don't want X piece of rare/ex loot continuously getting it over and over and not being able to give it to the people who actually want it. This type of drop system would be good to foster teamwork, but is utter CRAP if you're gonna rare/ex all the stuff that people will actually want. Walk of Echoes should have been enough to tell them this.
And yeah, I don't remember what the old endgame used to be like, because I never did it back then. Most people's experience with getting a Duelist's Chapeau was a year of waiting and/or drama with their Dynamis LS. My experience was going in there with a few friends and getting it on my first visit.
