I think that when Belkar dies -- and I assume he will; the oracle hates Belkar but was straight with Roy to the point of trying repeatedly to warn him of Xykon despite Roy's too-clever question structure -- it will be the end of Belkar. No "Oh, but now he's an undead/golem/construct/polymorphed talking lamp" nonsense. Durkon being made a vampire was a plot point Burlew felt was very important to Durkon's character arc and I don't see him reusing it just as a "gotcha" for people expecting Belkar dead. I'd actually say that Belkar's death will be the culmination of his arc (I guess it'd sort of have to be) so there won't be any cute tricks to mitigate it.

But, yeah, I agree that it won't be until well into the last book since I can't see the next couple years going without 1/6th of the OotS (or 1/3rd depending on Durkon).

I foresee this information giving Durkon the courage/hope/whatever to regain control from the vampire long enough for Roy to kill him.

Yup. That's how I saw it too. There have been a few little hints about things that Durkon might use to regain control at some point. Seems like this is one more.

As to Belkar, my working assumption is that he'll sacrifice himself at some critical point near the end of the last book to save the day/world/whatever. Probably in some kind of parallel to Kraagors death. And yes, it'll be the culmination of his own character development arc.

But the remaining question is: How's Belkar doing? I'm assuming Roy's heading out now, and V's heading in. So they should run into each other at some point. I'm assuming, given the "jump from one scene to another, because they're all basically happening at the same time" format of the last 20 strips or so, that we'll jump back and see Belkar dealing with the door guard vamp guy next. Probably concluding with one or both of Roy and V arriving. Maybe arriving on time, or maybe too late. Dun dun dun!

Or... Their timing will be perfect. Poor Belkar. Upstaged by the second stringers (in his mind anyway).

I suppose the wraps up the last of the "Why didn't Roy do [this]???" reader questions from the Godsmoot.

I had the exact same thought. Seems like the last few pages have been entirely about explaining why all the crazy theories were wrong.

New strip is up with MITD teasers...

-- Is a "beast"
-- Is ugly (attractive to goblin beastmaster)
-- Can communicate with canines (and perhaps other animals)
-- Isn't "owned" by Xykon
-- Is immature (in age, not just attitude)

MITD has also communicated before with the demon roaches but since those are constantly making 4th wall breaking commentary, I don't know if it counts as useful.
