I'm assuming V will arrive shortly to save the day. I imagine lightning would work well against a silicon elemental. Or is that too obvious?

Unless they can hold out for 24hrs, I'm betting more on an in-law member of Girard's family showing up or Ceila.

Thought they only had her for like 20 minutes or so. Timing should be about right I think (and it's a comic strip, so who knows how much time's really passing anyway). I suppose it would be too easy though and would allow them to compare notes and actually maybe figure stuff out. So they'll probably be saved/captured by the Linear Guild instead, leaving V to pop out alone in the middle of the desert wondering where the hell everyone went. Oh! And Belkar has to be turned into a Vampire at some point, right?

You're right it's 20 minutes, I don't remember where I got 24 hrs. V is watching the whole thing on the Archfiend's scrying T.V., so he/she will have a general idea of the OotS' location when the time is up.

It was something more like 45 minutes total. Two of the fiend guys were in it for 20 minutes each, the other was severed early on in during the fight with Xykon.

But they may not use their entire allotment at one time and just burn through one 20min period. The Gate is destroyed which is what they most wanted there anyway.

Edit: Comic in question. It doesn't actually specify though whether "me and him" are cumulative or separate. I guess the fight was short enough that it could have been 3.x minutes for the one and 10.x minutes each for the other two (10 minute fight total)

I interpreted it as a period of time for each of the splices. The first one (the necromancer with the familicide spell) lasted just a few minutes, so that archfiend only gets her for that much time. The other two splices both lasted until she lost concentration while fighting Xykon. So each of those fiends gets 20ish minutes with her. My understanding is that just one of them is using his time right now. I suppose they could then burn another fiends time, but why? As you say, they got what they wanted with this.

Oh. here is the strip in question. Seems clear that just one of them is using his time, and his time is 20 minutes, 35 seconds. Um... Which while interesting and all that still leaves us with the definite probability that V will come back "soon". Whether that means that she saves them, or some other random thing will happen is pretty much up in the air.

Ah, good. I thought that was the case but nice to have it definitive.

Didn't see that one coming.

So does Nale & the drow kill Durkon now or does Durkon kill Nale?

I was thinking Durkon becomes horrified at what he's turned into and runs off.

Well, Durkon-ally-of-Malack or Durkon-ally-of-Greenhilt is still Durkon-enemy-of-Nale. I can't imagine Nale expects Durkon to just wander off and never bother him so I'd hope he planned that far ahead when setting up the Malack thing

I don't think so. After all, his body has to get back home somehow. It makes the posthumously prediction of the Oracle really creepy now.

Spoiler blah-blah, read the damn strip.

I agree that Nale killing Durkon would dork up the whole prophecy thing. But it would be really poor planning to think "Ok, we kill Malack and then... oh, I suppose the newly released thrall cleric vampire will just take care of himself." If nothing else, throw another Greater Dispel on him. So I would expect some sort of confrontation or resolution beyond "Durkon leaves, Nale shrugs and lets him".

Speaking of, Z looked pretty happy to be casting that Greater Dispel Magic. That's more emotion than you ever see out of the guy. Maybe he's thinking about the xp.

And for want of a level two Darkness spell, eh? Could have at least given Malack enough time to think of something beyond "spend my last remaining seconds casting a failed Slay Living."

That, or Obscuring Mist or Deeper Darkness. Although I would not be the least bit surprised if Nale and Z both had Gust of Wind, fire magic and Daylight available.

In these kinds of threads I make a specific point not to spoiler anything. If several days go by during a regular set of updates and the thread suddenly bumps, you should expect a comment about the next comic. Also, who manually checks for updates instead of using rss feeds?

x2

I wonder if this was the reason the fiends decided to spend the first set of 20 minutes. Maybe Malack owned them and never paid up.

Damn when this strip updates, it updates.

I imagine now that the main vampire is gone that Thrall Durkon will revert back to Normal Durkon.

Well, "normal" vampire Durkon.

I don't use the RSS for updates. I just see activity on other forums' threads about the strip and toss a link here if someone else hasn't beat me yet.

Don't know how vampirism works in D&D actually, but isn't it possible Durkon would revert to being a normal human if his creator is destroyed within a given time of being vamped? Cause that's one of the ways you can reverse it in lots of movies and whatnot. Even if that's not the case normally in D&D rules, since Malok used some kind of spell to speed up the normal "3 days in the grave" thing, maybe that gets undone somehow (since it still hasn't been close to 3 days).

Or... He gets left as a vampire. Cause... drama! Either way, as Joph pointed out, he's still going to be an enemy to Nale and Co. I also didn't see that little twist coming. Guess that's what makes this strip interesting. Stuff never happens as you'd expect.

Oh. Also didn't think about the whole thing with Durkon and the prediction. Posthumously doesn't quite have the same meaning in a world where folks can get resurrected.

Part of becoming a vampire is being drained to zero constitution, i.e. death. So even if killing Malack undid the cursed undead part of it, I'd think you'd just have a dead dwarf. But looking at the D&D wiki, nothing indicates that you can "cure" a newly formed vampire in this manner anyway.

Killing the vampire that created the spawn in D&D just frees them to be normal vampires or vampire spawn, as appropriate. It's under the Create Spawn description for vampires. Durkon is definitely > level 4, so he was created as a vampire.

Edit: For slight wording clarification.

New strip.

Behold the pimp-stick of Durkon! Also, he has his accent back as a free-willed vampire.

If he gets his accent back when he's free-willed, does that mean he's faking it?

Heh. Wonk.

Scottish, duh. Also this is the best time to take out Z since he just used his only Greater Dispel Magic spell, and Durkon has the backup cast with the staff.
