Mispronounced names !Follow

#1 Dec 05 2004 at 8:29 AM Rating: Decent
I thought this would be a fun and kind of handy post. I know a lot of people put a lot of thought into making a name for their avatar and as we all no its a text chat game. So it leaves us to try and figure out phoenetically the way peoples names sound. I realized people were mispronouncing the way I intend my name to sound the other day when I was on the phone with an RL friend who plays on shiva with us and he mentioned my characters name... he pronounced it like NOR RAIN I told him that that wasnt how it was said lol that it was more like
Nor un so I figured I would make a post about it and that way we can all know how the other peoples names are meant to be said ^^.

My name is pronounced as 'Rogue-eeee', on a TS server once, everyone kept saying it like 'Rog-eee' sounding like groggy without the first G. XD

I'll be really suprised if anyone who I've played with could pronounce my name correctly. Also, no one has ever guessed the true origin of my name. Here's a quote from http://www.pantheon.org explaining it, "Calais:The son of Boreas and brother of Zetes. As participants in the voyage of the Argonauts they played an important part, among which freeing King Phineus from the Harpies."

That site doesn't have a pronunciation guide, but the American Heritage Dictionary does have a pronunciation guide for the French city named after the Argonaut:http://www.bartleby.com/61/36/C0023600.html

That may seem like way too much information, but it felt good to finally put it out there. Thank you to the OP for starting this thread.

hmmm well I don't know how people pronounce mine, Agawulf, but its broken down into two parts incidently most people call me one or the other:
Aga: derived from AGAmemnon (ancient Greek king in trojan war, as well as Sheridan's old ship on B5 (Yeah I'm a big geek)) I always pronounced it like the ahhh you make when you run away in fear followed by a sharp -ga sound
wulf: derived from beoWULF and is pronounced wolf

I dare say it's be a bit difficult to mispronounce my main's name: Tillis

Or my mule: Rubygloom

But for my other mules I could see mayhaps a hint of discrepency: Yuzuki and Azimaria; You-zoo-key and Ah-zee-ma-rhee-ah, respectivilly.

They're not completly mules, I do play them a bit. After all, that a good chuck of slots for armor and weapons going to waste if I don't find a use for it. ^^;

lol some names i've botched up:

Alwayshope: i pronounced it "Always Shoppe" (like the fancy spelling of the word "shop" that some stores have)...got confused when someone called him "Hope" once. (supposed to be Always Hope)

Knightzneverdie: for some reason (illiteracy or dyslexia who knows haha) i always saw this as Knights-zen-ver-dee-ay (pronouncing both the "i" and "e" from "die" like in spanish)

Syrius: i pronounced this one like the word "Serious" although it's supposed to be more like "sigh-ree-us" with an "I" sound, instead of an "E" sound.

you would think mine would be easy, but because of the spelling people mess it up all the time. It was originally to be Loki, which most think is from the Norse god, but it is actually from movie Dogma (Matt Damon's character), which is based on the biblical Angel of Death...it was my Socom name and also happens to be my nickname because of my last name having the first 3 letters Lok.

Loki was taken, Lokki was taken, so I wound up with Lokkii. People think it is pronounced Lock-Key or Low-Kigh because of the spelling, but it is actually pronounced Low-Key.

I was horrified to learn my name was being pronounced cammy-taru!!! Thats why everyone asks if I'm a girl taru or boytaru. I'm a boy!!! I feel I'm sufficiently perverted to justify this. Its Kami-taru. Kah-mee-tah-roo. Kami=god taru=tarutaru. I control the forces of nature. /sigh I'm sure no one will really read this though.

It's fairly simple phonetics for Talisia's name... though i've heard: "Ta-lee-sha" "Ta-liss-ee-ah" and my favorite: "Tal-sissi-eh"

for the record, It's: "Ta-LEE-see-Ah"

*edit*

(to Javex) And here i always said it: "Ja-vecks" ^_^;;;
