New Xbox to run older games
Microsoft also announces 'Final Fantasy' deal

LOS ANGELES - Microsoft on Monday unveiled the high-profile games it planned for the launch of its new Xbox 360 console and revealed it would not abandon its existing Xbox platform for the foreseeable future.
Microsoft, which hopes to overtake Sony as the number one console maker in the next generation of machines, made itself popular with current players of its Xbox titles when it announced that the 360 would be compatible with older version games, as well as the high-definition ones being produced especially for the 360.
There had been widespread speculation that Microsoft would make a clean break with its first attempt at a games console by winding down production of the original Xbox and making the new one incompatible with older games.
But Robbie Bach, head of its Home and Entertainment division, said: "We are absolutely committed to shipping today's Xbox well into 2006 — there will be 200 new games for it this year and we continue to encourage our publishing partners to develop games for 2006."
Sony is still selling its original PlayStation several years after introducing the PlayStation 2. Mr Bach said the Xbox would appeal to a slightly different audience as enthusiasts moved on to the 360.
Microsoft gave no details on price, date of release or the number of units it expected to ship this year, but Mr. Bach said it would be shipping in North America, Europe and Japan during the Christmas holiday season — a first for all three territories to be shipping a new console in the same holiday season.
Analysts at Goldman Sachs expect Microsoft to ship 2 million to 3 million 360s by the end of the year, giving it a significant time-to-market advantage over Sony, whose PS3 is not expected to appear until several months later in 2006.
At an event on the eve of the E3 video games trade show in Los Angeles, Microsoft unveiled many of the titles that would feature on the Xbox 360 at launch. A key capture was Square Enix's Final Fantasy XI, the latest in a popular series.
"We are very confident that the Xbox 360 will be the most powerful platform in the next generation," said Mr Bach.
"We are way ahead in software and services, where Sony hasn't even begun to invest yet."

I think they're being a little too bold by saying, "We are very confident that the Xbox 360 will be the most powerful platform in the next generation," said Mr Bach. I've checked some of the PS3 stats and it looks like the xbox 360 will either have about the same, or worse. Also Xbox 360 offers a 20 GB hard drive, PS3 offers 50GB Hard Drive. So I think they are a little niave to say it will be the most powerful platform. Both systems will have it's ups and downs, but overall I think they will both be pretty much at the same lvl.

My guess on the reason the PS3 is going to be released after the Xbox 360, is so they can tweak it and try to make it better than the 360, since it will already be released. If you take a look at the PS2 and the Xbox. The PS2 was released like 1-2 years before the Xbox, and it is up to par with it. So it will be interesting to see how the 2 compare, and very exciting to see these amazing systems come out here in the near future. ^^

Yeah, I hear that the PS3 is actually MORE powerful than the XBox 360. I ALSO hear the the XBox 360 IS NOT Backward Compatible. There supposed to be 2 versions. One for $299 that is the barebones XBox 360, and a $360 one with a harddrive, backward compatible and other crap. That kinda sucks. PS3 already has some very cool games coming soon. You can also use the PSP as a controller and remote supposedly. Very nice. Of course I'm gonna get a PS3. I "might" get an XBox 360...maybe. Just that I see no reason too. The launch games look sucky, and they will wait till PS3 comes out to release Halo 3; of which I'm not a big fan of anyway. XBox mainly has the early bird advantage. Other than that, PS3 has some stellar games coming out, plus the graphics WILL be on par or more than likely, better than the XBox 360. As for Nintendo Revolution...hmmm. If there's a Mario Kart Revolution, Zelda, or Smash Bros...I think I'd get one. lol, of course they all will be coming soon.
yeah I believe they'll be the same, quality wise, theyre both very sleek and smexy machines.

Won't happen. MS will not overtake Sony simply cause Japan will continue to refuse to embrace an American videogame console. Its only real acceptance is in america and then it's only slightly better than Nintendo's. As long as sony doesn't go fubar, they'll maintain control of the market in reality
MS sold 1.7m consoles in asia, 5m in europe and 13m in NA.
that shows that japan doesn't like xbox. but they have 2 rpg that looks promising at the moment. their asia market will highly depends on those 2 games.
xbox360 and xbox has 2 entirely different design, and that's why backward competibility is so low. and MS said they will make the best selling games be able to play on xbox360 first. which means DoA series or halo etc. but who play those games really when you have a newer game?

Of the current "Big Three" systems, Xbox is indeed the most powerful. And unless you're some Sony fanboy it's not to hard to accept considering the PS2 is nearly two years older than the Xbox.
From what I've seen, the Xbox 360 is one hell of a machine, and I don't think Sony is anywhere near done with their system, all they've done is show movies of "what it's capable of" and not actually the PS3 doing it. I wouldn't be surprised the Microsoft is giving Sony a run for it's money in making a better machine, but I think in the long run it's going to cost Sony. The PS3 has been talked about since late 2002, while I believe the new Xbox was late 2003 or early 2004. Microsoft is pushing to have it's system out before Sony does, and it's probably going to debut a good year ahead of Sony's. That's going to give Microsoft a much better grasp on the North American market, and this is while Sony just keeps their little scientists locked in a white room trying to make a better machine. Sony has the fanbase and game developers right now, but if the Xbox 360 comes out first Sony's going to lose them. Unless Sony's PS3 debuts with a very impressive line of exclusive videogames, they're going to start out in the market a few steps behind Microsoft, and that can hurt them.

you still have to consider that none of the xbox360 games run in xbox360 too.
all of the demo, even playable demo are run at apple G5. after the impressive sony presentation, they came out and talk about using 1/3 of the graphic that xbox360 is capable of.
i believe both companies talked crap about their numbers. it will be down the games at the end.
xbox archieve around 3m sell when it started but have halo selling around 2.4m copy at the same day. xbox360 hasn't got as strong line up as xbox. considering halo3 isn't coming up, team ninja hasn't finish their work, DoA4 won't come till later. most major big hit of xbox won't be there. it will be a pure fanbased to buy xbox360 at the start. and doubt they will sell good in asia with that line up.
there is also rumor saying sony will break tradition to start in US in spring first. but just rumor. but consider xbox only sell 1.7m units in the whole asia, sony release their console in asia first could off set the disadvantage of being 6months late in america market. the potential market of asia and china is hugh. and consider ms only sell 13m unit in US, that market is gonna be tight and small.
at the end of next yr, if xbox360 didn't get improvement in asia, they simply will not be no.1 .

Just to clarify what someone had mentioned earlier, Xbox 360 will NOT be backwards compatible.

If you don't believe me, watch the Microsoft press conference, the speaker clearly says backwards compatibility with the hottest titles from Xbox. In Microsoft fashion its a truthful statement meant to be ambiguous hoping that the consumer will come to the wrong conclusion.

Unfortunatly from what I've seen on various TV shows this is true. Xbox 360 will be backwards compatable with Select "Best Selling" titles. In other words, what they decide to make patches for.
It'll be interesting to see how backwards compatable PS3 is as well. They said that the PS2 was backwards with the PS1 yet there are a few games I could not finish using the PS2. It just would crash at key points.
To Pokiehl: Microsoft really hasn't been up front with the displays either. So far all I've seen is a few games with graphics that look like they could run on the original Xbox. More often then not 90% of microsoft's sayings are just marketing speech. Their MTV unvailing was nothing more then how many stars can we get to say Xbox 360 is da bomb in half an hour.
They give the excuse that any of the demo's they were showing were on Alpha machines and that the end products will be much better once they start using their Beta machines. If what they're producing on Alpha machines doesn't look any better then what the Xbox can run, not sure I really trust the Beta machines.
Also like it's been said, Microsoft is an american product. It'll take a lot to convince Japan to embrace the technology especially when they have a local company making a console that just sounds more impressive.

PS3 will support output to 2 High Definition sources up to 1080p (which I'm guessing is one step higher then 1080i). I can't say anything at this time about the xbox because I haven't heard anything about it's output other then most games will support 720p out of the box. Even the offical Website of the Xbox 360 really doesn't mention anything other then it'll output up to 1080i
PS3 supports Wireless controllers using blue-tooth for up to 7 controllers (I have no idea why 7). Xbox will use wireless controllers for up to 4 controllers using whatever system it uses.
PS3 supports up to 1.8 Teraflops, Xbox 1.
Ps3 comes with 3 Gigabit ports, 1 in, 2 out. Xbox 1 port. No need for a hub.
PS3 will also support wireless connections like the Xbox as well as conductivity with the PSP. Other then the conductivity PSP wise, really both systems are the same.
PS3 has 256MB XDR Main RAM @3.2GHz 256MB GDDR3 VRAM @700MHz, Xbox 512 Megs of ram @700Mhz Shared. I don't know about you, but ram operating at the same speed of the processor. Every computer geeks dream!
Xbox lists their system as 3 cores running at 3.2 Ghz, each core able to hyperthread 2 threads. The PS3 has 8 SPE's in its processor, 1 being used as a backup. Too much mumble jumble to really be able to tell the difference and I'm not that much of a computer geek to be able to properly say but it looks like the PS3 processor is faster.
