How exactly does Artifact Armor work? Is it really that critical? And is this armor actually the best armor in the game for each specific job?
IMO it is, based on your level.
But it depends on your job, and what pieces you have. i've seen alot of high level mnk'swith their af1 boots or pants.

So does that mean if you get your Armor at let's say, level 60. there's still better armor to buy at the AH? Cause if so, why spend so much time getting it? Aside from the fact that it looks better and actually looks different based on what job you have, since a PLD in white armor or a RDM in red armor looks pretty damn cool...
It really depends on your job. For instance Paladins can keep thier AF armor until level 75, or they can change to Adaman armor at level 73, but before 73 there really is not any better armor for a Paladin besides AF.
I see most Red Mages using thier AF armor at 75 until they start replacing with with pieces of thier AF2.
Dark Knight on the other hand, given I do not know much about when they lose thier AF, but from what I have seen they do not keep it long at all.
Then there is Bard, I know a few Bards who never even got thier AF because there was better armor out there for thier levels.
So to answer or not answer yur question, which ever way you see it, it really depends on your job.

I got all my AF for a few reasons:
1. Bard AF Hands, Legs, and Body add + skill, which enhance our buffs. The Body adds + string skill, and string instruments aren't used as much, so a lot of Bards will pass this up for Justacorps +1 until going after the Minstrel's Coat at 62. The Bard AF feet and hat are not useful in partys in the least(IMO), but some macro in the hat on Curaga for the -1 Eminity.
2. There is some story elements that unfold as you do your AF specific to your job. Personally, I enjoyed the Bard story.
3. Most importantly for me, I just wanted to complete it. I remeber seeing people in AF when I was a Newb and I couldn't wait to have a set of my own. I may not *need* my AF (although the Bard hands and legs rock), but I *wanted* it. If for no other reason, I like to walk around in my mushroom hat! ^^

Hello! I'm a bard and to be Honest I tried to get rid of my BRD AF as soon as possible. Only reason why I Got BRD AF was because it's FREE!!! everyone loves FREE Gear. I wore the Gloves LEGS and BOOTS till i hit 72. now All my af is in the NPC storage. If you are going to take WHM up to 60+ I recommend you get AF unless you Go with Vermillion cloak which is like 5mil? And now that i think about it. AF isn't all so bad anymore.
Unless you can afford to fork over the several millions for a few pieces of gear, monk AF is definetely good. Our body is useful, acc+5 (weee!) vit+4 (most of our ws have vit modifiers) and enhances Chakra (HP=3x vit). Hands are nice to macro in for boosting, and nice str. Head enhances focus (more acc) and has our biggest mind+ for head so it's good for Chiblast. Ok, the legs and feet aren't too good, but there's not much else around, at least till the 70's.

Seeing that WHM is your highest job, I think you SHOULD get it. To say that "its a waste of time" is kinda wrong. You "waste" a lot of time on the game, sometimes doing nothing. On this game you WILL spend a lotta time doing things. Hell, you might be helping others get their AF. You might as well get yours. If I see you at lvl 60 without it, prepare to get yer pooper poked.
As others have said, some jobs use it and others dont. But why not get it if you can? I mean the game is about more then just exp, and getting you AF's is fun (though finding the chests sometimes isnt). Not only that, but most of the jobs best AF's are the latter ones, which you have to do the earlier ones to get.
The other reason, is simply to look cool. I mean who doesnt think a DRG in full AF looks awesome? OR WHM or RDM or DRK. I think PLD's look a little weak, and WAR looks like an SnM getup, but its like a mile stone.
Also keep in mind, that they add gear to the game nearly every update. At one time, the AF's were proly the best you could get, but they keep adding gear, and sometimes that gear is better. But most of the gear that would replace AF's is outrageously expensive, and AF's will often times "do" until you get enough gil for those other pieces.
My thought on it anyways.
