OK this is bravetarus bro (51blm/25whm) so while lvlin in kuftal tunnel our nin had to leave T.T so we got a pld. (MISTAKE) everything was fine until we started fightin. the pld was lvl 52 so while fightin everyone said for him to equip earth staff we didnt get a reply until like 40 mins later sayin that he didnt have 1. BY then the party already pissed. so next day difrrent pld same place say thing happen didnt have a earth satff (WTF). IM just wondering why the **** dont plds dont use earth staffs anymore there not so expensive on our server only like 150k and it would really hlp for the -20% physical dmg and +4 vit even though they wouldnt hit hard or wont hit at all it would hlp whm brd rdm and even me a lot of mp for them gettin hit for like 45 than like 80-110.

Thats is a very ognorant comment here coming from a black mage. Very few Paladins use earth staffs in exp parties. The only time I ever had to use an earth staff in an exp party was when we got multiple mobs at once. Do you have a damn dark staff and all of your elemantal staves?, well if not the stfu, there is no requirement saying a Paladin must have an earth staff at level fu*king 52 give me a damn break and stop trying to act like an expert on all jobs. Take a look at yourself your in your early 50's at your job alone, nonetheless any other jobs. Im sure he was not there telling you how to MB.

Reason being is that the damage (no matter how small) aids the hate control that all tanks need, although taking damage reduces the hate amount which why some mages want the earth staff used. Hmmm I wonder, which works out better, damage or taking less damage? I honestly don't know, so can someone answer it for me.

But I've leveled several jobs, and am seriously thinking of (time will only tell) of taking pld up after my current, 68mnk. As such, I've asked the advice of many plds, ones in my linkshells, static, and friends. Although they haven't said "Get an Earth Staff and use it exclusively, no sword/shield for you" most do own one. But I have only seen them exp with sword/shield.

Also, don't you think it's strange that all those high lvl plds, all seem to buy those really pricey swords and shields, they must be uber vain just to look good while in Jeuno. o.O

Don't b*tch about jobs you don't understand. I try not too, I also assume that by lvl 50, a person has the common sense to know how to do his job correctly. If not then, but 60. And if my pld pt's with a sword and shield, then who am I to come to alla and flame him just because I think that he should be using an Earth Staff?

Here's some advice, before you start a post like this, go to the paladin forums and ask. Really simple, I'll even help you out...

Hi! I'm a 51blm atm, leveling in Kuftal. I was wondering if it's in our parties best interest if our pld tanks use an earth staff instead of a sword and shield configuration. Thank you.

Last I checked, earth staff was 220k. o.o Anyway, I guess it really depends on the situation on when to use an earth staff. If you're dealing with mobs that hit really hard, then yea, get an earth staff. Personally, I never really needed one til I went to Den of Rancor, where stuff was hitting about 150 per hit at my level. XP But still, a PLD should carry an earth staff on them if they can.

A Dark Staff is far more important to a PLD, especially a high MP one (Taru, Hume).

+10 mp while healing is the key, since you normally have to rest for 10 ticks to get that bonus to your mp regen. (MP regen rate increases the longer you rest).

Which brings up a pet peeve of mine. Why do mages get up halfway through their rest to cast a poisona or paralyna or something? Just wait until full mp so you don't lose your mp regen bonus. Sheesh.

PLD not using an Earth Staff? I could care less, but what about a PLD who cannot hold hate? I am by new means an expert on the job, but this PLD IMO had issues.

Zone = Boyada Tree(sp?)

Party(lvl 63-64) = RDM, BRD(me), DRK, PLD, BLM, MNK & THF(the MNK left about an 2 hours after we started and was replaced by the THF)

Target Mob: Crawlers

We started the party in the at the small pond area thats filled with crawlers and darters. We set camp in the water with the DRK pulling. First thing I noticed about the PLD was that he was a mover. Every fight he moved, this *is* a BRD specific complaint, I can't hit my songs properly if people keep moving. However, with a RDM in the PT, I was not to concerned with that. Especially since his MP rarely got below 200. He would flash, but cures were few and far between. As a result, the DRK would often get hate for a good portion of each fight. The DRK ended up tanking about a third of each fight, and he wasn't even using Soul Eater + Last Resort + Beserk Guillotine WS. This being said, we managed to keep the chains going.

Now fast forward an hour or so, and our MNK has to leave. A replacement THF arrives and we change camps to one of the tunnels filled with crawlers. The tunnels have a higher risk factor, as there is a better chance of links and pops at camp. Now the PLD has SATA to help hold hate, and for the first five minutes with the THF, he looked like a different player. His MP was being used, he was using all his skills, and he did not lose hate. We thought perhaps someone else had been playing his character because this was not the same PLD. Unfortunatly he could not sustain this level of play, and he quickly reverted back to his old self. The RDM, upset with the PLD not using MP, began to wait until his HP were near red before healing. I asked the RDM about this and she, "I'm giving him refresh and waiting in an effort to make him use his MP." Although this was an extreme measure IMO, it did force the PLD to heal himself.

At the end of the day the party did OK. Not great XP but not bad. The fact that we did OK made me wonder what could have been. The main things I noticed about this PLD was that he seemed to react to losing hate, instead of constantly trying to stack hate on himeself.
For example, THF SATAs on PLD, mob turns to PLD, DRK hits mob, mob faces DRK, PLD provokes and gets hate, DRK gets hate back, PLD uses Flash.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't it be better to voke and flash directly after SATA, then use your healing and other skills like sheild bash until those are ready to use again? Perhaps this pally had an off night, because I can't see getting through 64 levels if the best you can consistantly do is hold hate for little over half the fight.

Hello I'm a 52 Taru PLD. And to be honest Earth staff doesn't make a huge difference in dmg taking well not that i've noticed but with Sword + Shield i Do notice me Blocking with my shield a lot and plus i get to do burning blade for 30 dmg... and i'm cuter then the other plds. So earth staff is not really necessary for tanking EXP mobs.

60 PLD here, and I was fortunate enough to purchase the Earth Staff at 51. I used it a few times, but not enough to make it worth my 200k, still I skilled up my staff and havent had the need to use it recently. I sold it at 56 to purchase a Gluttony. Sure this seemed like a mistake at the time, but I farmed up some cash and bought it back.

Paladin's are taught to use a Sword + Shield in EXP constantly. Earth Staff has it uses pre-63 in some EXP Partys, but nothing to complain about. I had little to no troubles tanking Robber Crabs in Kuftal w/o the Earth Staff. I don't see many people complaining about "n00b" BLM's not being able to afford the latest and most expensive spell for their lv.

Earth staff is primarily used for high-end fights, gods, hnms, nm's.. etc. Sword/shield is my personal favorite combo for party fights, and with a high shield skill(mines in 260's) you block fairly often. Granted you still take damage, but less. The amount of damage not taken from equipping the earth staff isn't so significant that the paladin will suddenly never need curing. For a high level mob it will knock off about 15-20 or so.

56 Pld 71 blm here speaking.

1. It is a Pld's choice whether to use Earth Staff or not for XP party.
2. Earth Staff from everything I understand about endgame IS required for tanking HNM and Gods.
3. Pld have higher rating in the sword and shield than in the staff department. I.E. Would you use the 1974 Ford Gremlin or the 2005 Dodge Viper?
4. Pld are designed to take damage and survive. We can take a hit from a mob for 50-100 that the mnk wearing PJ's would see 150-250 damage or the l'il taru blm would see 400d. We heal to the best of our ability the damage we take which allows us to hold the mob's attention. Curing 100 points of damage pisses a mob off more than curing 80 damage.
5. @57 pld get that sweet *** piece of gear called a Gluttony Sword. +7 Vit vs +4 Vit of the Earth Staff. Sure we could use an Earth Staff for 6 levels, but then our sword skills would be underleveled. Not good. Staff for skill up parties sure why not. Staff for experience point parties? Not for this pld.
