Garuda Knife doesn't drop, nothing drops. After you beat any of the Primes (not sure about Fenrir) you get a Whisper of <element> which is a key item. You trade that back to the quest npc for certain rewards.
Ability to summon Garuda
10,000gil
Garuda Knife
Wind Ring
Wind Belt
Bubbly Water (key item, all regular primes drop these used to trade to npc in Norg for the Evoker Ring).
Or you can just keep all the whispers and trade them for the Moon Bauble so you can fight Fenrir.
A normal exp pt setup of 60's can kill these things, of course the higher the better, I'd suggest melee and tanks to be 65 or higher. These battles aren't hard, just keep the appropiate Bar- spell up because their Astral Flows hurt alot.
Another thing, you need lvl 7 fame to get the Tuning Forks, you must have the fork to fight it. It's not like a bcnm where you can get into the battle on somebody else's orb. No fork, no fight.
I'd like to go with also. I have a 75 RNG I can bring. I'd like to get that knife for my THF.

just a question regarding these avatars...
so if i beat an avatar, do i lose the fork and if so can i get it again to help other peeps? 62brd ^^

If you beat the avatar, yes you lose the fork but you get a whisper instead.
Once you cash in your whisper (either for the avatar or gil or whatever) you have to wait before you can get the fork again.
I believe it's 24 hours to fight the avatar, I don't know if the quest resets itself earlier then that.
If you fight and fail you keep the fork but I believe you have to wait as well before you can fight again.

hey girly my bro is lookin to do garuda. i think u might have seen him in jueno shouting or in one of ur LS's. his name is juzamaza and he has a 63 blm he can take. ive seen him do a titan prime fight and didnt do too bad so if ne one needs her /tell him ok.
