Hey all I'm hoping someone here is a bit tech savvy and can help me out. One of the problems I have leveling is I am constantly getting problems with my PC and basically DCing. The problem is I don't know where the trouble lies. The two main problems I get are as follows:

(1) I get the blue screen of death all the sudden
(2) More recently the game has just been freezing up and then I get booted back to windows with a message saying that my graphics card is not responding to commands.

The stats on my PC are good enough to play the game:
1 gig Ram
Radeon 9600
Athalon 3000

These have always been minor problems for me but recently it has gotten extremely bad to the point where I don't really want to party because I DC so often. If anyone has any ideas or has seen anything similar before please let me know.

I don't know what to say as it can be any number of things such as:

*Corrupted file(s)
*Bad RAM
*Bad Video RAM
*Bad video card
*Bad video card drivers
*Bad video card connections
*Obsolete/Incomplete/Incorrect/Bad Video accellerator drivers
*Many, many other things

A few suggestions things I'd try:
1) Take out the video card (hold onto the chasis to avoid static) and put it securely back in the motherboard
2) Completely unistall DirectX, OpenGL and any other video accelerators you may have installed
3) Run diagnostics on your computer (defrag, etc)
4) Uninstall and reinstall the video card
5) Download the latest video card drivers and use them to upgrade
6) Download the latest DirectX and OpenGL and re-install them
7) Completely remove FFXI and POL, then do a complete reinstall
8) Update POL and FFXI

If none of that works, you can also try changing out the RAM, Video RAM (if possible) and/or the entire video card.

In essence, what you are trying to do is start as fresh as posible without a complete disk wipe and OS reinstall. The entire process will take you a while (mainly the unistall/reinstall of FFXI and POL) but it could help clear up your problem.

If I had to guess, based on the two messages, I'd say it has something to do with your Video drivers. The blue screen of death is very unspecific, but the other message indicates video problems. Do you have the latest ATI Catalyst drivers? If not, try updating to that and see if it goes away. If it doesn't, some general things you can try are:

- Defrag (not likely to help, but good practice)

- Scan for Spyware/Adware - Ad Aware and Spybot are both good programs

- Update all of your system drivers, including motherboard

- Apply Windows critical updates (warning: can actually cause problems :P)

- Make sure it's not running too hot - there are programs out there that measure system temp, but I don't have any links off hand

Also, a question for you. Does this happen all the time, or just during FFXI?

Ooh, good call. I forgot about DirectX. :P

replies to some of the questions and suggestions:

I have tried defraging in the past and it didn't help, that was one of my first thoughts although I should do it again just becouse it has been a while. I recently took an aircan and made sure all the fans were not dusty (they were actually) but that didn't seem to make a difference.

There are only two times this has happened. The main time is when I play FF11 the only other time is occasionally (but rarely) when I play Rome total war the bluescreen will happen when I go into the 3D battle field.

I have updated drivers in the past but I could check to see if any new one's have come out.

edit: I will have to look for the temp moniters.

Some of the older versions of DirectX don't handle TnL (Transform and Lighting) as well. The same goes for some video cards. Upgrading to the latest version of DirectX may help, who knows? :)

Did any of this end up helping?

Updated drivers and direct X plus gave fans and internals a good cleaning. This got rid of the freezing but I still occasionally get the blue screen of death.
