I agree with the supply and demand to a point. However I believe that this price jump would have come anyways. Maybe not this quick but it was coming. Just for the fact that they know people will pay it.

For all the ******** we Americans do about taxes and prices and such, the simple fact is we still have it a LOT better than most other places around the world. For example, income taxes in the U.S. average about 30% (depending on bracket, of course) - but in other countries, it's 40, 50, even 60%. Other nations pay much more for gas because they are taxed more heavily. Some people say lower the gas tax, but really, it's quite reasonable comparatively.

And while I know some cities have it different than others (Chicago's is great, btw), public transportation is an option more often than not. I mean, if I had to drive in everyday instead of taking the commuter train, ... well lets just say I wouldn't be playing FFXI. Yes that means you have to put up with the rude jerks and weirdos (just like FFXI!), but you do what you have to.

People are resourceful and figure out ways around problems; we also have a tendancy to band together in the face of tragedy. It may not be easy, but we will survive. If people can re-build their entire lives after having their homes destroyed, the rest of have it pretty easy. Those who refuse to adapt or just sit back and whine while waiting for others to fix their problems are the ones who will perish. You have to be willing to help yourself before others will help you.
