/em cringe so hard my teeth fall out.
2 stacks of sleep shrooms 10K (its been awhile since i actually bought sleepshrooms, they might be significantly more now).
1 stack of Rock Salt = 1K (from 3 main cities from AH, can be a lot cheaper then this, or you can pay 2K in jueno, but for reasons of showing you this, ill use 1K)
Your wasteing tons and tons of gil by makeing these yourself with the current price of ingreds. The only reason roast mushrooms are even on the AH, is because they are a byproduct of witchkabobs (the HQ or roast mushrooms). If you farmed the crystals and the mushrooms, this would make sense, but buying them is a huge loss.
Since you asked for it, i'm going to post the guide I wrote for cooking to 60. And also some other info. Warning this is going to be really long.
Quote:
Welcome to Acepod's cooking guide lvl 1-60. This guide is a compilation of other guides, and includes all of my failures and successes along my journey. I will make suggestions based on the current availablity of items, and the current economic condition. Since these factors may change at any time, be sure to do some research on your own, to be sure your getting the most out of your crafting.
A few suggestions:
#1 Check the AH selling price and NPC selling price of each item PRIOR to makeing any.
#2 DONT RUSH!! This is the key to make synthing (all synthing) more enjoyable, and more affordable. I will post links for you guys to some of my favorite resources for finding items. 90% of the time it is cheaper to find them from an NPC/farm, then it is to buy from AH. Rushing it (or powerlvling as it is sometimes refered as), costs more, and is much more frustrateing then takein it easy. Doing some synthing every day during down time, will keep you from getting burned out on it, and will ensure you can consistently craft without running out of patience or funds.
#3 Research the items you intend to make each day in advance. Some of us dont have the ability to look up recipies or locations of things while playing (i finally broke down and bought a router so i can, but many people cant). So makeing a plan each day of what you would like to acomplish, and printing it out includeing locations of NPC's, and the items needed will make it that much easier to get it done.
#4 Either create a mule, or craft just enough so that your inventory wont be jam packed all the time. Haveing so much ingredients, or finished product, that you cant lvl because you dont have space is a kill joy. I suggest a mule in each city as well, so you have access to all the goods you will need to buy. I think Square Enix purposly made it so you need to go to several different places to find ingredients for one synth. If you have to go to 4 cities to get the items, it could take you 1-4 hours depending on what modes of transportation you have available. I have one mule in each starting city, and my main, which i often times keep in jueno. For example, Rock Salt in jueno is 2K a stack, while i pay roughly 30 gil each for them in the grocery store in southern sandy.
#5 do the goobie bag and mog expansion quests as soon as you can afford it.
http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/db/quests.html?fqtype=Storage
#6 The cooking guild is in windy. I would suggest doing your cooking there FOR AWHILE. The guild is open from 5:00-22:00 and is closed on Darksday. The guild is located in Windurst Waters @ E-6 of the northern part of Windurst Waters.
#7 This guide will improve your results on synthing. It will tell you when it is a good idea or not to skill up. It will tell you when you have the best chance of HQ (high quality) synth. I suggest everyone from every craft read and understand this when synthing. It WILL help you out ALOT!!. It is also in this same forum if you need it, but for ease of use heres the link.
(This link wont work for non members, so I am pasting the entire thing below this guide)
#8 Order of the days:
Firesday -> Earthsday -> Watersday -> Windsday -> Iceday -> Lightningday -> Lightsday -> Darksday
#9 Finding the items you need:
Regional Merchants
This will be one of the best things you can have with you at all times when crafting. You simply find the region that sells the item you need, go to *Regional Info* in your menu, and see who has control of it. Then look back at your guide to see who is selling the item.
http://ffxi.cannotlinkto/regional-merchants.php
EVERYONE SHOULD PRINT THIS LIST
Aside from Regional Vendors, there are tons and tons of NPC's in Vanadiel that sell the items you need for less then the AH. This link will tell you who sells what and where. Be aware, that store stock varies from day to day, and as of this date i have no clue how or why it works the way it does. But check these places before buying from AH, as you can usually save a lot of gil.

Recipie list, and links to locations of items:
http://ffxi.cannotlinkto/recipedb/list.php?guild=4
Food effects list:
http://ffxi.cannotlinkto/itemdb/food.php
This gives some of the food effects, that are most popular for most everyone.
#10 Guild contract. This is a very important thing for all crafters to know. Once you reach a certain lvl ( 28 ) in any craft, you can form a guild contract with that guild. This means, you can earn Guild Points, by synthing or buying the guild item of the day, and turning it into your guild item guy. In the case of cooking the guy's name is Qhum Knaidjn, and he can be found right outside of the cooking test hut (which happens to be right next door to the cooking guild check pos above). You can only have a contract with one guild, and should you ever decide to contract another guild, your guild points will drop to 0. This can be very very bad, so make sure if you want to change guilds, that this is worth it to you.
Guild points are very worth it. For cooking, they allow you to get *Raw Fish Handling* and *Noodle Kneading*, so you can make Sushi, and Pasta's. You can also get an Apron, and a cooks hat, which add a little to your cooking skill.
The first one i would get is Raw Fish Handling, because you can make Sushi toi skill up in the higher lvl's, and make a profit from them. But since this guide is for 1-60 and not 1-100, ill leave it at that for now.
#11 Cooking Test
Every 8-10 lvls you will need to take a test, to continue skilling up your craft. YOU DONT NEED TO TALK TO ANYONE OR DO ANYTHING TO GET TO LVL 10 COOKING, BUT AFTER THAT YOU DO!! so at lvl 8-10, 18-20, 28-30, 38-40, 48-50, 58-60, 68-70, 78-80, 88-90, you will need to make or purchase the test item, and turn it in to the cooking test guy located in the cooking test hut next to the cooking guild (see pos above). In this room, is also 2 NPC's, who will give you synth support. One is regular support (and is free), the other is advanced synth support, and costs from 200-1K gil (depending on lvl). Some of the harder/more expensive recipies should be done with advanced synth support. It does cost some extra gil, but can make skilling up easier. If your more then 2 lvls below the cap, and or the items your useing are expensive, and or the end result is a worthwhile item (IE well worth it to sell), i suggest getting advanced synth support.
In the higher lvls, i chose not to use advanced support, because i actually want to break my synths, and save ingredients. This is kind of a trade secret, people choose not to tell others, due to their competative nature, but if your getting skill ups, and only loosing your crystal and one or 2 cheap ingredients, this ends up being much better skill up wise then makeing useless items, that have expensive ingredients. But up to lvl 60, i dont think this applies very much, so we shall move on
Now that we have that out of the way, lets get to cooking
I originally was going to enter the locations of every item in each synth, so that you could have everything you needed right in front of you. However, that would take a REALLY long time, and take all the work out of it. There is a sense of accomplishment when finding out things on your own, and i have provided the resources you need to find out where everything is at. As i suggested above, do your research before cooking each day, and it will be no trouble at all.
Burnt Toast:
0-3 Carrot Broth: (water crystal + 4 san d' Orian Carrots) Cheap and simple. NPC these for slight loss but its quick and painless. Carrots are in Sandy go figure, NPC is right behind the AH if your headed to West Ronfoure.
3-10
A few different recipies for this lvl. Check the AH to see which you think is best. Orange juice is best if your a lower lvl mage (pre refresh), as you can skill up and lvl up at the same time, while makeing your party's exp better!! You may also want to make a lvl or 2 worth of grilled hare, and then progress to the orange juice, or sliced sardines. Grilled Hare does not stack, so inventory space may be an issue if you go that route.
3-5 Grilled Hare (Fire crystal Dried Marjoram, Hare Meat ) This is great food for lvl 1-10 jobs, and since the patch it sells fairly fast in starter cities.
3-10 Sliced Sardines x2 (wind crystal + Bastore Sardine)
Expect to break a few of these to begin with. If you dont have any fishing skill, grab a rod and a sabiki rig, and go to windy by the fishing guild, and you can lvl fishing to 10 (i think) while getting free sardines. You can also ask fishermen there if they want to sell them cheaper then AH, many will.
3-10 Orange Juice (Water crystal Saruta Orange x4 )
You will now need to take the cooking test for the first lvl of cooking. You can take it as early as lvl 8, but no later then lvl 10. If you dont take the test, you will NEVER get skill ups again.
***Guild Test*** Salmon Sub: (Earth crystal + Crying Mustard, Black Bread, Apple Vinegar, La Theine Cabbage, Smoked Salmon, Mithran Tomato) Or you can buy it from Kopopo (sometimes) if you don't want to hunt down ingredients. They are fairly hard to find, so i definatly suggest buying it if you can.
Mac N Chese Please
These next few lvls are interesting. If you want to farm ingredients, you can make some nice gil here, if not the gil sink isnt that bad.
If you feel like farming:
10-12
Honey (Wind crystal Beehive Chip x4 ) This will come in handy later, i suggest storeing on mules, or sell now and buy back when you need.
12-16
Roast Mushroom ( Fire crystal Sleepshroom x2, Woozyshroom x2, or Danceshroom x2, + Rock Salt ) sell on AH
If you dont want to farm, then do
10-15 Bug Broth x4 (water crystal + 2 lugworm, 2 Shell Bug)
Sell to NPC
15-20 Selbina Butter x4 (ice crystal + Selbina Milk, Rock Salt)
Ice crystals are kinda expensive, but this is THE RECIPE TO MAKE. You MUST keep all of this butter if you plan on takeing cooking past 40. If you dont plan on takeing cooking that far, then sell on AH, as it sells REALLY FAST.
***Guild Test*** Pea Soup (fire crystal + 3 Blue Peas, Distilled Water, Dried Marjoram, Wild Onion) Kupopo sells this too, i would suggest buying it from him its a lot easier. If hes not selling it (guilds have some items sometimes and not others like that), then youll have to make it.
Hamburger Helper:
20-23 Meat Jerky x2 (ice crystal + Giant Sheep Meat, Rock Salt, Dried Marjoram)
AH this to make slight loss or NPC for slight loss your pick.
23-29 Insect Paste x12 (earth crystal + little worm, distilled water, millioncorn)
You will break some of these at first, but dont worry youll make it back in profits + some. Again save anything you cant sell right away to a mule, for profits later on. This recipie will make you quite a bit of gil, and selling them on all 3 mules (1 in each city), I was amazed at my profits. I actually funded my Emporers hairpin about half of the 600K i paid with this recipie.
29-30 Pineapple Juice (water crystal + 2 Kazham Pineapple)
Mainly used to get to lvl 30 guild test. Sells at profits on AH so don't feel guilty about making all you want. Just know it caps at 30. They dont stack, so one lvl will probably be more then enough. Also if you get burnt out on insect paste at any time, and are a lower lvl mage (pre refresh or a party without refresh), you can make these to use during lvling, from about lvl 26 or 27 pretty reliably.
***Guild Test*** Vegetable Gruel (fire crystal + Chamomile, Frost Turnip, Tarutaru Rice, Batagreens, Rarab Tail, Distilled Water) Sorry, you have to make this one yourself, or hope someone has it on AH. It's pretty unlikely to find one there, but i would check first, as getting the ingredients for this recipie takes a bit.
Meat and Potatoes
30-33 Meatball x12 (earth crystal + san d'Orian flour, hare meat, distilled water)
Sells well on AH in windy, as it is fishing bait. The Sandy flour DOES NOT stack, so this becomes a pain. I try to empty my inventory completly, and send about 20 flours to my main, and just make as many stacks as you can, and post on AH. This is one time where haveing a mule in sandy is going to save you a lot of time!!
33-38 Jack-o-Lantern (fire crystal + Ogre Pumpkin, Beeswax)
This recipe will cost a decent amount up front, but it is well worth it profit wise. They dont stack, but sell fairly quick, and at a nice profit. DONT BUY PUMPKINS FROM AH!! You will also break several of these, so makeing them in windy wiht advanced support is reccomended.
DO NOT MAKE MEAT MITHKABOBS. Some people might be tempted to delve into the meat mithkabob industry here, but dont. You WILL loose a lot of gil.
Alternative to Jack o Lanters (though i dont know why you would).
33-37 Fish Broth x2 (Water crystal Bastore Sardine x4 ) This is cheap as cheap gets, but you wont make any gil. Perfect for the power crafter, not so good for anyone trying to make gil.
37 (or 38 )-40 Melon Juice (Water crystal Watermelon, Thundermelon ) Agtain only for the mages really, if you want to make these while leveling. They may have a small profit from AH, but they dont stack.
37 (or 38 depending)-39 Pet Food Delta Biscuit x6 (earth crystal + Rye Flour, Distilled Water, Bird Egg, Land Crab Meat)
Any NPC outside the guild itself buys them. Not worth AHing them.
***Guild Test*** Meat Mithkabob (fire crystal + Cockatrice Meat, Kazham Pepper, Mhaura Garlic, Wild Onion) Buy one off AH and turn it in.
Shrim on the Barbie
38-42 Pie Dough x4 (water crystal + san d'Orian flour, Selbina butter, Rock Salt)
Told you to keep that butter ^^ Put it to good use now and put all these pie doughs where the butter was because you will need these soon too. (assuming your takeing cooking past 4.
42-46 Pickled Herring (ice crystal + Nosteau Herring, Dried Marjoram, Rock Salt) This recipie was rumored to sell to NPC's for a profit, but i have not personally tested this. Check out the prices ect, and decide for yourself.
Or if your a mage***
42-47 Cinna-cookie x33 ( Fire Synth San d'Orian Flour, Cinnamon, Selbina Butter, Lizard Egg, Maple Sugar, Distilled Water ) Not much gil in this synth, and theres a lot of ingredients, but not too hard to make. Plus if your a mage, this is something you should have a lot of.
and other alternatives if your a mage is
44 (or so )- 48 Apple Pie x4 ( Fire crystal Pie Dough, Maple Sugar, Cinnamon, Lizard Egg, Faerie Apple ) This will use some of that pie dough you were saveing
Also this happens in a lot of pie recipies, you do the first few lvls with lizzard eggs, and then you get 2 more skill lvls if you change to bird eggs.
48-50 Apple Pie x4 ( Fire crystal Pie Dough, Maple Sugar, Cinnamon, bird Egg, Faerie Apple )
And to make this even more confuseing, if you wish to make mulsum in a few lvls, i suggest doing this recipie
46-48 Grape Juice (dark crystal + 4 San d' Orian Grapes)
Choices choices huh?
***Guild Test*** Apple Pie (fire crystal + Faerie Apple, Pie Dough, Cinnamon, Maple Sugar, Lizard Egg) Yep this ones easy.
Surf n Turf
This one you can start at 48 should you decide to skip pies all together.
48-52 Crayfish Ball x 12 (earth crystal + 3 Crayfish, San d'Orian Flour, Distilled Water)
More fishing bait. Sells very well in windy AH.
52-56 Muslum (ice crystal + Grape Juice, Honey, Distilled Water) If you made some grape juice, then by all means do this recipie. If not, i would suggest
52-56 Stone Cheese x4 (dark crystal + Selbina Milk, Rock Salt) (do this with advanced support, dark crystals are expensive, and you WILL break some)
56-60 Yagudo Drink (dark crystal + 3 Buburimu Grapes, Yagudo Cherry)
If you gather these ingreds and dont buy from AH, you will make some nice profit.
***Guild Test*** Yagudo Drink (dark crystal + 3 Buburimu Grapes,
Yagudo Cherry) Yep this one is easy as well.
I may continue this guide through lvl 100 someday, but for now, im going to stop it here. I think this will give you the most out of your cooking carrer, and cost you as little as possible, or even make you a profit on the way

Ok, i have had several requests to post some in depth info on crafting and the directions, and day correlations (UNY !!!). I also get asked at least once every time im logged on which direction you should face, and what day moon phase ect.
So, here goes. All of the info im posting, is from other sources. I simply researched, and use this info. From my tests (not documented, just observed), the direction you face has a HUGE impact on skill ups when crafting. I started doing this when i was lvl 78 cooking. Anyone with a decently high lvl craft, knows how rare skill ups are with high lvl recipies. To add to that, anyone with a high lvl craft, knows that sometimes for strange reason, youll get a lot of skillups. The info im providing might be able to explain some of these starange skill ups, and also reduce the cost of crafting, and success rate, and provide more skill ups faster.
At lvl 77 cooking, i would average approx .1-.2 skill ups for (2) stacks of ingredients. It was becomeing EXTREMLLY expensive to lvl, and so i would save up gil, and do it in spurts. When i tried facing a specific direction (N.W. for fire crystal), i went from 78.3-80 cooking in 4.5 stacks of ingredients. That is so much faster then i had seen in nearly 40 lvls of crafting. I then went from 80-90 in approx 22 stacks of ingredients (give or take a few). Even if you add 3 stacks (which i dont think it was 25, closer to 23, but i always give the benefit of the doubt), that is significanly faster then even lvling cooking at lvl 20 or 30. So i am thoroughly convinced it works.
I need to tell you, i am no expert at this, and there are more factors then just the direction your facing. I found a new study today, which was based on elemental magic, instead of crafting. Since magic and crafting seem to act exactly the same from all the tests ive read, and the info i have gathered, im going to include some of the magic info. Yes folks, magic resists, and damage are also effected by the direction your facing. Here is the link that explains it so much better then i can
http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/forum.html?forum=10&mid=111150933078344768&num=2
I will be posting relevant info from the post pertaining to crafting, but i suggest any magic casters reading this check out that post, and read it carefully.
Ok lets get to the good stuff.
Here is a few links to elemental charts. I have posted them in the gallery and am using those links, in case the host sites dissaper, hope theres no copyright problems with that. Just in case, all rights and credit goes to the author of these pics.
http://www.rareex.com/image/uploads/compass_pic.php
http://www.rareex.com/image/uploads/StellarMap.php
The top one is a compass, that has color coded areas. The inner circle (or points of the stars), represents the best direction to face for success. The outer circle (or actual circle part), represents the best direction to face for HQ and skill ups. I dont know that i agree completly with this, but ill discuss this later.
The second one, is just the constelations as shown in the opistery (sp?) in windurst.
Here are the constelations, and directions.
Dark North Odin
Fire Northwest Ifrit
Water West Leviathan
Lightning Southwest Ramuh
Earth South Titan
Wind Southeast Garuda
Ice East Shiva
Light Northeast Alexander
Here is the part i mentioned about magic. It correlates to Crafting, jucst check out the "Cast to Craft Analogies: " section for relationships.
Directional Relationships:
TO DECREASE SPELL RESISTS: Face the direction of the constellation matching the element of the spell you're casting.
TO INCREASE HIGH DAMAGE SPELL CASTS: Face the direction of the constellation that beats the spell you are casting.
TO INCREASE CRAFTING SUCCESS: Face the direction of the constellation matching the element of the spell you're casting.
TO INCREASE HIGH QUALITY SYNTHS: Face the direction of the constellation that beats the crystal you are using.
Day Relationships:
TO DECREASE SPELL RESISTS: Cast on the day the matches the spell.
TO INCREASE HIGH DAMAGE SPELL CASTS: Face the direction matching the current day.
TO INCREASE CRAFTING SUCCESS: Synth on the day the matches the crystal you are using
TO INCREASE HIGH QUALITY SYNTHS: Face the direction matching the current day.
Cast to Craft Analogies:
(Critical Resist) is to magic as (Critical Failure) is to crafting.
(Partial Resist) is to magic as (Partial Failure) is to crafting.
(Basic Resist) is to magic as (Crystal Only Failure) is to crafting.
(Base Damage) is to magic as (Normal Quality) is to crafting.
(High Damage) is to magic as (High Quality) is to crafting.
At the recent event S.E. had in california, they had a question and answer session. Where the lead GM of FFXI, answered the questions of the audience.
Quote:
Audience Question:
Does the direction you are facing take any affect when you synthesize?
It may depend on what you're synthesizing
So S.E. is not exactly giving away secrets here, but that sounds a bit to me like it could mean something.
If you read the test with elemental magic i posted the link to above, there is difinitive proof, that the direction your facing, and the days of the week make a difference in the power of the spells, and the frequency of "Resists". To me this means, that along with making moon phase affect things in the game, S.E. went so far as to make the direction your facing make a difference. There was also a discussion (i cant seem to find), that WS, and SC, andf MB are also affected. I find it hard to beleive that with the Depth of this game, and all the little details S.E. put into it, that the constelations, are just there for looks. Everything in this game has hidden or visible effects, and i beleive this to be true with crafting.
I wont attempt to make beleivers out of the non beleivers, but i suggest trying it for yourself to see what happens.
To get to the point of the compass, i have a few observations.
It has been my theory, that HQ and skill ups are opposite. Although the compass does not agree with me. This means i need to do some testing, but from my experience, the skill ups came very fasy by facing the direction OF the crystal. Recently, i tried making HQ's, by facing the direction of the crystal, and the direction the crystal was weak to. I received a lot more HQ results, by facing the direction the crystal is weak to ( in this case it was fire crystals, and i faced west for Water constelation). Since im not able to skill up on that recipie, i couldnt test that part. However, im planning on picking up a new craft, to test this some time in the not to far off future (golssmithing anyone?).
The next set of info (charts) comes from another post on allakhazam.com. Here is the link
http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/forum.html?forum=10&mid=10998978117683690&num=9
Im going to attempt to redo the charts here for your viewing pleasure, and ease of use. We will see if my HTML skills are working on this one
Ok my HTML skills suxorz, so im pasting in B&W, if you need color or it is confusing check the link

Ill breifly explain this. The *'s represent the chance of the synth. More *'s the better Colum on the left is the crystal you use, and the colum on the top is the day of the week. Decide what your goals are, and craft on that day or days.
Ok so now we have the direction your facing covered, and the day of the week, what about moon phase?
From another post testing moon phase i read, it stated that crafting for success or skill ups should be done on full moon, while crafting for HQ should be done on a new moon. Of course there is a problem with that test.
No one thought about direction when this test was done, and so this may be a factor that the tester didnt even realize, and may have affected his results. Also the day of the week was a minor part of the test. All 3 of these factors should have been included in the test, but alas they werent, or werent used as in depth as they should have been.
This test also shows that crafting on the day your crystal is weak to is the best for HQ.

So hopefully some or all of this info will help out all our LS's crafters. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to let me know. Also if you knwo of any tests that have been done, that i havent had the privilage of seeing, please send me a link. I will continue to test these things myself, and post relevant info on them.
Thanks to all the people who unknowingly helped in this
