I am lvl 43 atm and i ave 245 blacksmithing and climing and I don't think you can choose a class of weapons, it all depends on the recipe you buy. If you buy axe recipes then u can make axes etc.

My warrior’s smithing isn’t high enough for me to make that decision yet, so I can’t speak from experience. However, from what I’ve read the weapon smithing branch is indeed broken down into different weapon types. For example, if you choose to specialize in swords you won’t be able to craft specialized maces. I’d try to post a link to some more information on Blizzard's forums, but they seem to be having a lot of trouble with them the last few days and I can’t get in.

Once you go weaponsmith you get a subset of weapons you can make that armorsmiths can't make and then once you specialize even further you come to even smaller subsets for each weapon type (Axe,Sword,Mace) that the other specializations can't make.

You will see some recipes that say "Requires Weaponsmith" (i.e. Heartseeker) and usually higher ones that say specifically "Requires Master Swordsmith/Hammersmith/etc" (i.e. Frostguard, Arcanite Reaper, Annihilator, etc).
