Where do I find bait to fish with? I have looked and can't find any in Goldshire. I found the trainer, the pole but no bait!

I think you don't need a bait, at least to fish normaly. There are some items that enchance your fishing skill for a period of time, which look like bait.
You want to find anyone listed as a fishing supplier or tradesman. They'll sell nightcrawlers, shiny baubles and other lures to increase your fishing skill.
I agree with them. It is not nessecary, but it increases skill in fishing temporarily. You can find at a Trade Goods Merchant or fishing supplier.

You don't need bait to fish, just a fishing pole, the important thing is to fish in lower level zones until you get your fishing skill up. If you are new to fishing you cast your line, wait for the bobber to splash, then you right click it to "catch" the fish. Being a night elf I fished from Rut'Theran Village until I reached a skill level of 75. This provided the most "skill-ups" per cast to that level, then I moved to Darkshore for further skill-ups.

being a 300 skill fisher i will say that bait DOES help you not lose your fish. granted, you cant be a lvl 50 fisher in Feralas and expect to catch anything with best pole+ bait, but i have noticed i do not lose fish very often w/ even basic bait fishing in area of my skill lvl. almost all fishing supply vendors will occationally sell a +5 fishing skill pole (Strong Fishing Pole), its one of those limited supply things. remember you have to be skill lvl 10 to use this pole though.

At early levels buying the bait off the vendors is your only option, but as others have noted it is not required just helpful. Once you hit high 20's early thirties there should be somewhere to hunt ghouls. I play alliance so the Raven Hill graveyard is my hunting ground of choice. Ghouls seem to have nightcrawlers on them a high percentage of the time and these add 75 to your fishing skill for 10 minutes. Found them very useful for finishing the master fisher quest at 40.
