I can't give you a good answer because I just made the choice myself. Didn't get any response at all in this fourm when I asked the same question. I chose Weaponsmith. You have to be level 230 to buy the plan for one of the items you need to make to complete the quest. That's the Big Black Mace. If you're like I was shortly after level 40, the material cost of the quest is pretty high. I mined most of the ingredients myself and managed to fish the black pearls while doing the Artisan Cooking quest. I figure the going AH rates for the quest materials was 40-50g. When I turned in all of the weapons required for the quest, I was given the opportunity to train (For a fee) on 4 weapons. I was already using a Shatterer which is the lowest level plan you get. At level 46, it took me over three hours of grinding Elementals to get the 4 "Core of Earth" needed to make my first Shatterer. I sold it for a little over 13g. Now I'm debating the "Origins of Smithing" quest series. It looks like another another expensive one. I think they want something like 120 Mithril bars as well as lesser amounts of Iron and Truesilver to learn three armor plans. Maybe some high level Blacksmiths can shed some light on what these choices mean in the long run.

I chose weaponsmith, but currently weaponsmith is not that good compared to armorsmith when u max out in my opinion....i am 300 Swordsmith and materials to make the weapons cost from 70g to 600g. the weapons dont sell very often especially when u can find better weapons from raiding instances. Armorsmith on the other hand seems to sell better on the Auction. they can make epic armor which is worth alot of u can make them...but at first the items u make arent that good. so in the end its all up to u.... do u wish to make ur own weaps which u will nvr end up making alot of or become an armorsmith where u farm day and night to get the epic plans? These are my thoughts....any of u other blacksmith wanna help me put some input would be great.

I am a 275 skill Armorsmith, and to be honest it sucks. There's nothing useful I can make that a regular blacksmith can't. The Epic armor that was mentioned earlier is an Epic drop... so, extrememly rare. Going rate on the AH is upwards of 200g. Getting profit from THAT would be fun. All in all, I think it's a case of the grass is greener for both Weaponsmiths and Armorsmiths. Most high level tradeskills pretty much suck for maing profits.

Hey guys, Currently in my guild we have a collection of 2X Armorsmiths and lots more Weaponsmiths, the ratio of Hammersmiths, axesmiths and swordsmiths is something i'm not sure about.

The one thing I can say is that with my BS(thats Black Smithing FYI)@280+ and looking at bankrolling darkiron or thorium for the remaining skill points, the cost to do so is staggering and the return if any is minimal.
If your looking at doing smithing as a cash source you could be in for a rude shock. The materials required for most of the plans over a skill of 250 require some work or gp to gather, even getting the plans can be a challenge on it's own.

Looking at the profession and discussing it with the other BS guys in guild there is no real advantage either way, yes there are more higher level weapon plans that look pretty damn good but i'm enjoying the ability to make and twink out lower level guildies prior to raiding areas where their gear isn't so hot.
We as a combined team do this within the guild and situation depending extend the offer to out of guild friends. I personally feel this is a true reward.

I agree with Denyardar. Its all about helpin people out. I don't charge for my BS services. I make everything I can for guildies. It gives you a good feeling to help out. If you wanna make money farm ore and stone and sell it on AH. I just recieved my mace crafting quest but will not be able to complete it for a few levels cause it requires me to go to Stratholme. :( The reason I choose Maces is because the last maces I can make are better then most mace drops I can find in end game instances. Also I am a strict mace user only, mostly 2h maces. And it seems that maces are the least popular cause there are only a few 2h epic maces in the game so far, that I can find.

armorsmiths epic armor is the dark iron set ...the chest recipe is the only drop and is also BOP but with great stats something like +22FR(for all of you warriors that want to tank MC someday fire resist is a must)890armor and +18 stam.the rrest of the set is similar accept the boots (random enchant)and gloves with+agi.
this whole set is difficult at best to accuire the plans to;need honored+rep with thorium brotherhood.

darkiron armor ...yeah FTW

AFor a long time you won't have anything useful, perhaps the

But nothing great to make money with at all. Well, if you have the luck to receive one of the following plans:

Armorsmithing is the best profession in the game, people will pay you 50-100g just for the click on the button to make the item, they bring all mats, yo ujust build and earn a lot of gold, since those plans are extremely rare.

But, it's quite unusual to get this, anyway as an armorsmith you are still needed, dark iron armor or other special armor with resistances, like the new dark rune-items are at your disposal, a weaponsmith is useless in late-game, he cannot make any great epic-items, except for the weapons from the thorium bortherhood and you almost always have a better laternative found in an instance.

I got the Lionheart-Helm as first smith on my server, I made about 1500g with it so far and I never got the mats to sell one
