Time to take a break?Follow

Hello,
I just recently started my first character (5 days ago), and yes, I am a converter from FFXI. Well, I knew how much of a money maker crafting could be in FFXI, so I figured I'd get in on the ground floor here with my WoW character. Well, I've spent more time lvl'ing my craft and not my character it seems. I was wondering if I'm about where I should be with my crafts compared to both the time I've been palying and the level I'm currently at:

NE Druid:
Lvl - 12
Skinning - 113
Leather - 97

Is this about where I should be, or do I need to take a break from gathering/crafting to lvl my character more? I've noticed that it is growing increasingly difficult to skin the mobs I need to skin to get any kind of good lvl'ing in, so thats why I figured I'd come here and ask. I chose leather to make my own armor btw, and its done pretty good so far :)

Please let me know.

Probly too much time, Just me, to put it in to perspcective, with skill level caps in place for LW you cannot go past 225 untill you get up to level 35, so you are ahead of the game. On your money making comment, crafting armor will not get you a lot of money, as a skinner/LW you real money will be form selling Skins and Armor kits, they sell well at the AH.

miakalover,

I was a FFXI convert as well. I dropped FFXI during beta WoW after playing the game for only a few hours. I've loved it and still love it that much.

First thing I'd like to address is your goals with crafting. In FFXI high level crafting could get you some of the biggest bucks. That is not the case in WoW, although you can earn a decent living, crafting is not the road to riches.

Second you've picked the best combo for crafting as you level. As a leathercrafter/skinner. Don't even worry about your craft, just skin that which you kill. And once your back in town and you get a chance to craft whatever items, then take your time to skill up. I found that leather crafting was very fun. Your guild will love you for all those armor kits you can supply.

That's just my take on things, I hope my insight has helped.

Hello,
I appreciate both of your help on this situation :) Yes, both of your answers helped me very much. I forgot to say that I did figure that since crafting was apparently so much easier in the game that it would not be a money-maker, but that was also around the time it became extremly fun. Around lvl 50 or so I figured this out, but I also was just having so much fun crafting I couldnt stop :) Ive decided to just go have fun killing in Darkshore and Skinning everything in sight. Luckily, there doesnt seem to be many people that skin in that area, because I can usually just folow around some random person skinning all of their kills if I really feel like crafting :) Also, Ive figured out that Leather is going to give me some of the best armor I can have for a while, so Im having fun hunting down the pieces I need to craft myself some nice gear (Light Hides are so rare in Darkshore though :( ) So anyway, thank you again for your help, and I realy appreciate both of your inputs, and will be taking your advice :)

I think your looking at professions in the right way. They are there for fun and to help our characters along. They aren’t designed to make the best items in game. If all you want to do is make money, taking two gathering professions is the way to go. But I enjoy making things so I enjoy leveling my professions. As for leatherworking specifically, if you keep your skill high enough to make items appropriate for your level it’s a great skill. My rogue has used mostly player made armor for all of his career and he’s level 55. I’m sure that will change once I hit 60 and start doing raids, but its well worth it until then.

I also like the fact that Blizzard allows us to have fishing, cooking and first aid in addition to our two primary professions. All my characters have all three of these skills, even if they don’t really use them. I just think they’re fun.

As to leveling, keep in mind that your production professions will be caped according to your character level. The progression is 5, 10, 20 and 35. So you have to be level 20 before you can take your leatherworking past 150 and you have to be level 35 before you can take it past 225. Gathering professions don’t have a cap, but they tend to cap themselves. In other words, though a level 5 character could have 300 skinning its very unlikely that a level 5 character will be able to kill a level 50 plus animal in order to skin it.

Best of luck.
