Blacksmithing QuestionFollow

I'm a Lv31 Paladin, and being my first character in WoW, I might have made a few ill decisions along the way, like any newbie would. I chose Mining and Blacksmithing on advice of some of the stuff I read, and, common sense.

But I started to notice something throughout my Blacksmithing days early-level.

I noticed that the stuff I could make paled in comparison to things I could buy from the IF Auction House. I got into this thing where "why do it? these items suck anyway" and I stopped levelling blacksmithing. I only levelled blacksmithing when I picked up stones that I turned into grinding stones for skillups.

Well, right now, I'm Lv31 and my Blacksmithing is on, I think, 96. The only viable "Orange" Product I could make, are Runed Copper Belts, and the Recipe is 10 (!!!) Copper Bars. Ouch.

My Mining is, I think, 150 or close to it. I can't get to very many good spots for iron to try and raise mining so I guess that's not going up anytime soon.

My question is...

Without pissing newbies off by mining early level areas like crazy for Copper, and without getting ripped off at the AH in IF, where do I get loads of copper? Westfall gives me way too much Tin, I end up with more Bronze than I do Copper.

Now, I Could make Rough Bronze Boots, as well, but still.

Any suggestions on this?

When does Blacksmithing start making me items I can use myself? I noticed with Rogue, from Level 1 clear up until Lv17+, I'm wearing what I made for myself, as each new recipe usually adds something neat I can make and use. Blacksmithing doesn't seem to be the case. Or am I just missing some good plans?

As with any profession, you have to put the time into it to get anything good. You will have to **** off some newbies to get your skill up, unless you want to pay for your copper. If you take the time and focused on the professions, you can make better gear than drops until you get into later levels. I know of a few plans that can make money, so it's not a waste. You just have to know which ones.

I've already hit lvl 60 and I have 294 smithing and mining has been maxed since my early 50s. I found that if I had focused more on getting the materials earlier, the levels would come, albeit a little slower.

I started a new character on Bronzebeard to test my theory. By farming all the copper I could get my hands on, I gained 2 levels, putting me to 16, and put my mining up to 100. I can now make green items that are at my max level. I also made some money from the items I made, although less than if I sold the materials in the AH. I would have to go instance running in order to have something drop that is better than what I can make. Seeing as I solo a lot of the time, that's not likely to happen.

To sum up: You pay either in time or money. It's really up to you to decide.

I decided to farm the newbie zones anyways. I managed to get 52 copper ore in 25 min. *grins* Not bad.

I've gotten like 10 levels in Blacksmithing so far, I am starting to get pretty close to the Heavy Sharpening Stone recipe.

I love stone recipes. They are so very cheap ways to skill Blacksmithing, as you find these stones and don't have much else to do with them for the time being. And you get a Ton of them...

The stones are great for making sharpening and weight stones. They are a great way to add even more damage to your weapon since they don't remove enchants or counterweights. Just be careful how you use them in instances. You will lose the bonus every time you go in or out, including dying.

That too, hehe. They are also very cool to send to alt characters who can't obtain them yet. Like, I noticed, Course Grinding Stones had a level requirement of like Lv15, but yet, I don't remember a Lv15 character being able to easily obtain these, and the damage added to these weapons at that level... hehe.

Take axesmith line.... that's my only warning to you if you stay with blacksmithing.
