Mage Tradeskills -- Tailoring/HerbalismFollow

#1 Jun 07 2005 at 2:50 PM Rating: Decent
Ok this is my first account and I am a level 15 Human Mage... Right now I'm a 74 in Tailoring and an 85 in Herbalism... should I keep these tradeskills or pick up something else?

Tailoring is making me some good cash(figuring out how to properly sell stuff) and I noticed people pay some good money for Herbs in the AH in IF...

tailoring obviously good for a mage due to the "homemade" armour and you can get lots of bags, but if ur after money, i'd go mining rather than herbalism. Mining makes good money from the start as u can sell copper for 30+s per stack of 20 where as low lvl herbs dont sell too well in my experience. Once u get past around 100-150 skill in herbalism, then the herbs u sell start getting cash. both liferoot and wild steelbloom sell for loads and stranglekelp is very sought after. However herbalism tends to get slightly tedious after 250skill :p
Mining on the other hand will get u a lot of gems to sell, and once u get onto thorium u may even be lucky enough to pull up an arcane crystal or 2
that probably doesnt help too much, but if u want a money making profession, mining's the way to go

I agree; go with mining over herbalism. Both will make money, but ore/bars are always more in demand, since two crafts (engineering and blacksmithing) use bars, and there are quests that require tons of a certain type of metal (Ornate Mithril recipe quests, anyone? :-P). Herbs are, well, just used by alchemists, and have no quests. And the only things that use a lot of herbs are flasks, and few people have them and even fewer are willing to make them, and even fewer want to drink them, for fear of death and waste :-D

How does skinning compare to mining when it comes to making money? Right now i'm Tailoring/Skinning and i'm wondering if i should just give up skinning in favor of mining since i seem to kill humanoids more often anyways. They drop linen and are in a lot of quests after all.

Now that i think about it, that would make mine hunting pretty awesome because i can just use the linen i get from the humanoids for tailoring and ***** out the mining points.

I think i just convinced myself what to do.

I'd keep tailoring and replace herbalism with enchanting. It's nice for yourself and nice for money making. Besides that, with tailoring you can make green items to level up your enchanting (by disenchanting them)

Tailoring and herbalism is a good combination. If you enjoy it stick with it. If you don’t like herbalism you can go with either of the other two gathering skills; skinning or mining. I’ve not taken herbalism as high as I’ve taken mining, so I can’t comment from personal experience as to which will pull in more money. But I can tell you that I have a friend with herbalism and he loves it as a money maker. I’ve also read many posts where people use herbalism for making money and are very satisfied with it. I do know that some of the herbs sell for 1 gold each on my server and those aren’t even the high end herbs. So I’d recommend either herbalism or mining for cash. Pick the one that you find the most enjoyable.

Skinning is the easiest gathering skill, but because of this leather doesn’t sell for a lot. However, you can make decent money in selling leather in bulk. So again, it really just depends on what you enjoy most.

I would not recommend this to someone new to the game. Enchanting can be profitable later on, but it’s very expensive to start with and it can easily suck up all your money. I would suggest going with a gathering skill for now. If you decide later on that you would like to take up enchanting you can drop your gathering skill and take it up. You’ll have very little money invested in a gathering skill so dropping it won’t be so bad. And in the mean time you can use gathering to make some cash.

My only input on the Flowerpicking, the end all be all herb Black Lotus is BoP and cannot be sold.

Herbealism has to be the eazyest skill in the game, i hit 300 by level 37, could have got it a 36 but I didnt feel like asking for a guide to the crater, but one must remember all the flowerless(or useless flowerd zones). Menny zones are herbelest freindly ,STV,Highlands, wetland, felwood, the crater, ferallas, EPL,WPL but some zones are just awful, SG, Burning steps, tanris. Almost all zones have good mining, even the ones that are week in Herbs, so you places to succeed are better with mining. Now take it at face valure if herbs sell better on your server sell those, but some places are eazer dependent on server type(in Pvp it is better to have more than one option for places to find herbs/veins) The upside to herbs is less folks collect them so a better market, the downside most alchemest already pick their own herbs and usualy have a bank full of em, so unlike smiths alchemest have no quest to trun in a huge pile of potions or materials, droping the bottom out of the volume market for herbs.

I'm going to put in a vote for herbalism over mining. I do both on my alts, and with the ones who have herbalism/skinning I usually have about 30g by level 25. With the ones who are mining/skinning, it's significantly less.

I've heard that mining is more profitable at higher levels, but for a starting character I definitely recommend herbalism.

(It all kinda depends on starting zones, too; whenever I have a Tauren or Night Elf, I do herbalism; Trolls, Orcs, Dwarves, and Gnomes are mining.)
