Is there a way to have your character set up a shop, similar to the bazaar in FFXI? I'm aware of the tradehouse, but can you sell things [directly from your inventory] wherever you are?

you can't set up a shop, this is not FFXI nor Ragnarok. Here we have 3 auction house (AH) 1 alliance in Ironforge, 1 horde in Ogrimmar and 1 neutral in Gadgetzan.
If you want to sell something without going in AH you can send message in the trading channel but this take time to find someone interested.
