Move to a higher level area.
If the mobs are to tough for you there, level your char first.

u got 2 choices here.

1. go to higher level areas like Thousand needles, a heaven for miners.

2. go to the AH and buy ores, and smelt them, assuming they are still atleast a green colored skill.

mining is one of tha hardest skill to lvl. one thing i find funny/irritating about mining is once you get the ability to mine something, smelting it is already grey. like mithril, you only get to mine it at 175, and learn smelting it at 175. BUT, smelting it is already GREY, the only way to lvl up mining is really mining, and not thru smelting.

You lied. You can still skill-up on tin, so go do that. Or buy the mining enchant if you have enough gold.

I know you can still skill up on tin because I did until I could get iron.

The mining enchants are easy to get and add +2 or +5 to your skill. Just hang on to a pair of 'mining gloves' and use them any time you are just a few points short of being able to mine a metal type, it allows you to cruise past those little bottlenecks (I've helped out several guild members this way).

He might not have been lieing but misspoken instead. Try for the enchants like they said. If you go to the tradeskills worldofwarcraft forums on their main site there are various guides and one of them is for mining.

Tin veins at that point are green, that's why he's only considering silver veins to be levelable.

Although I've noticed for gathering skills, the skillup rate seems to be slightly better than production skills. Yellow will skill you up half the time or more, even if it's about to turn green. Go to 1k needles, it's definitely the best spot. Unless you're alliance on a PvP server, anyway. If that's the case, try redridge.

I have noticed that often Tin veins and silver veins are the SAME vein. They will typically just alternate which spawns. I don't know if it is to alternate EACH time between or on a more rare schedule, but I do know that at least TWO veins alternate in Duskwood between Tin and silver. And there are others in Lockmoden which do the same. Also, the caves with the Ogres in Lochmoden spawn both tin and silver with at least two alternating between tin and silver.

I decided to drop skinning and take up engineering and researched and was sure that this is what I wanted to do. I was playing one evening, and towards the end I made my way to IF. I decided to do the switch... stupidly when already very sleepy. I clicked on unlearn... and boom unlearned one of my skills...

UNFORTUNATELY, given my less than stellar mental condition and awareness at the time, I unlearned MINING!!! Lost over 175 points in mining with the click of the mouse. So now, I have had to work on releveling that all over again. I did download a mod to help, 'Gatherer' from soulforge, however, it doesn't seem to be working. I got the 2.04 beta version, but I think I should have taken the 2.03 regular version, because NOTHING shows up on my worldmap.

Anyway, there is tin and silver in both Duskwood and Lochmoden and at least SOME of these alternate between what spawns at a given node.

Westfalls has a good supply of tin/silver veins. Both in Gold Coast Quarry and Janglode Mine. Remember, silver veins spawn where tin veins normaly would. So use Gatherer to track tin, and check those areas often.

You can, but it's rare that it will give a skill up.

I'm in the same boat. I had a friend take me to Thousand Needles but I couldn't find anything good...just copper and the occasional tin. Even if tin levels me up I found maybe 2. Then I went to the Mo'grosh (Mog'rosh?) Stronghold in Loch Modan and found tons of tin, and when I had gone there once before, I found a silver vein. I reccomend there. Also, is Gatherer safe? My dad is freaky about his computer and his is the only one that runs WoW, and he'll kill me if a miniscule trace of spyware appears on his computer. I don't want to die so...

woo! i can mine iron now! but like someone said, as soon as i learned how to smelt it, it was grey...
