Seems you never see any Fist weapons used in game, Looks like its cause of the availablility mainly.
can anyone confirm if they can be crafted?

The dps is also a bit lower than the average weapons for their levels, although in some ways the speed can make up for it, depending on the class/build.

Well, there are only 22 in the game. That's not much, considering there's probably that many swords for any given 5 level span; actually, probably for any given 3 level span. There are no craftable ones.
There are some epics from Honor ranks, I think, as well as white items from vendors. I remember a fist weapon that drops off a Scarlet named guy in the SM Graveyard (worthless, though). Most of the good ones are blue items from rare spawns in the end-game instances.
The Horde can get a green first weapon from a quest: http://www.thottbot.com/?q=1054
However, it's kinda sucky for a level 52 quest...
