your main problems is the materials, as you said.

so my tip for you, go skin some more.

if you say, you dont get those skins you need.

then my next tip for you, you may be too low level. level up some more so that you start to reach the monsters which will give you the leather you need.

coincidentally, for skinners, i recommend levelling up in STV from 30-45 or so...you fight so many animals, or come upon animals that others dont skin, that you'll get lots. im mid-50 now and i still can get exp from some monsters in STV as well as having 1 or 2 green quests there. so you really can hang around STV for a long time.

When i have a kind of leather and i need to get a "worse" leather, I talk to another leatherworker and i say him: "i change 1 thick leather for 5 heavy leather"(for example), and i get heavies from a thick.
You can buy the heavy leather from AH,too.

From looking on thottbot, you need a lot of heavy leather at your skill level. Also according to thottbot heavy leather drops from mobs in the 30 to 40 level range. It seems to me you have a few choices.

You could farm cash and buy the supplies you need from the auction house.

You could head to someplace like Stranglethorn Vale and kill the various animal types around there or the Hillsbrad Foothills and kill yeti until you advance your leatherworking enough to use Thick Leather.

You could play an alt with skinning and either mining or herbalism. You can then give all your leather to your leatherworker and sell the other items in the auction house for money to support your new character.

I sort of did option three. My main character is a rogue with skinning and mining. He supplied leather, metal and cloth to my alts with production professions. It worked out very well for me. I had so many supplies stuffed onto my alts that leveling up their professions went very quickly.
