Help with fishing requiredFollow

I am a level 27 Tauren Shamen with Herbalism and Alchemy. I didn't realise that the higher level alchemy required reagents made from fish, so I've only just learnt fishing. The problem is, I just can't catch anything! I caught something on my first attempt, but it was more luck than judgement as I've tried about 20 times since and every single time it tells me my fish got away.

Is there a knack, or something I'm missing? I won't be able to increase my alchemy skill much further unless I can catch the fish to make the reagents.

Always use a fishing lure. The best grant +100 to skill and pretty much ensure that you catch a fish every time as long as you don't go to a very high level zone. You can get lures from vendors or from an engineer (as for aquadynamic fish attractor).

Some bodys of water require higher level. Try fising in ponds or rivers near lower level areas.

As the above poster pointed out, some areas are higher than others and require a much higher level of skill before you can successfully catch anything.

Go back to a starting area for new characters and raise your fishing until it stops giving you a skill raise every 2 catches.
Then move to the next level area and continue to fish until you stop getting skill gains every 2 catches. Rinse and repeat.
You'll soon raise your skill :)

Also, as one of the above posters mentioned, lures help. But its not essential to keep using one to get gains when you start the ball rolling ;)

So, am I right in thinking that even some of the lakes/rivers that allow me to fish would still be too high level?

I assumed that if it let me fish there (rather than saying I didn't have high enough skill) then I would have as good a chance as any of catching something.

Thanks for the advice. Maybe I'll go back to Mulgore and do some intensive fishing!

Yes, there are some spots you can fish where nearly every fish will get away.
Like Mort says though, get lures (baubles, etc) as they will up your skill so you can land those fish,

Fishing skill is a bit different than some of the other professions. You could fish in the pond in your starting area, assuming it has one, from 1 to 300 skill. You don’t need to move to higher level zones to increase your fishing skill. However, all you’ll be fishing up are the same low level fish. Higher level fishing areas allow you to fish up higher level fish. So if you need oily blackmouth you aren’t going to fish any up in your starting area, even if you are gaining fishing skill.

So you have a couple of choices. You can fish in low level areas until your fishing skill is high enough to fish in the areas that have the fish you want. Or you can use fishing poles and fishing lures that give you a bonus to your fishing skill and thus fish successfully in those higher level zones much earlier.

Also be aware that when you go to fish in the highest level areas you’ll be required to use the best pole and the best lures even if you have 300 fishing skill. My rogue had 300 skill and a fishing pole with +20 fishing. He still was not allowed to cast his line in the Sea of Storms. With a +50 lure he could fish but 3 out of 4 fish would get away. With a +100 lure, a total of 420 fishing skill, he can fish reasonably well there.

One of the best places to start fishing for Horde is the pond right outside the gates of Org (go out the gate and right). Easy skill ups to about 100.
