So my secondary character (Little Louie) is a level 2 punk who does nothing but hang about the auction house (and the tavern next door, drinking pinot noir). He has two functions:

1) buying stuff cheap and selling it dear. It's not always easy to make a profit from arbitrage, as he sometimes has to eat losses on things that sounded good but that nobody wants to buy. Right now I have nearly 20 auctions outstanding, most of them for stuff that didn't sell the first time round. But all the same he makes more money sitting around than the average level 2 character does fighting monsters.

2) selling off the stuff my main character gets from drops. I just mail everything to Little Louie--this saves me the time of having to run back to the auction house every time my bags fill up and it saves me the expense of dumping my good-but-not-great drops on vendors at fire-sale prices. I estimate that ordinary items sell for 3-6 times as much at the auction house as I could get from vendors.

Any comments? I have never seen any discussion of this sort of strategy, anywhere.

I've only just recently discovered the AH fun. Seems to me, and you evidently have more experiance with it. You could pick a few key items and work them hard and make some decent dough. The think I have an issue with is what the heck is Louis going to do with his fortune?

Also, you're allowed to mail items between two of your own characters? Hmmm....

You can mail between your characters. Blizzard doesn't condone profiteering ... even if it's lazy :P

I do it too though :P

the AH is a grand place.

It truly is.

it seems a fine idea, specially when profiting from really cheap items. i'm in Crushridge / Alliance side and the Moss Agate can easily sell for 80s - 1.2g. i usually get a few Moss Agate for 30-50s and sell it for 1g.

gems and cloth are the best items to make profit from. either you sell them or keep them for later use.

have you tried selling Savory Deviate Delight? I sell the stack for 12g...

Ahhhh the AH, My kinda place.... buying and selling highs and lows profit and loss... all of wich gets my blood pumping i have a lvl 24war on crushridge as my main and at the time of writing this he currently has 49g and that was after spending nearly 45g helping various guild members... all thanks to the AH.. and a couple of Axe of Rin'ju <i think thats the spelling> bought em for 20g and sold them for 45g each.

it takes some time and some study but eventually you can just have sooooo much fun at the AH

btw this is my first post. w00t!!

My 39 rogue is my main, and I send all my sale loot to my 26 paladin. Once everything sales, I just send money through the mail back to my rogue.

As of late, I'm having trouble with the AH. I've got decent green drops: maces, swords, shields, armor, that require level 32 and up... one is even some plate armor that can't be worn until level 50 (I think), but none of them sell. I'm not asking more than the items are worth, unlike some who try to sale a level 30 green item for 20 gold (I've seen it attempted before). Do most of you people get your items to sale on the first try, or does it normally take a few tries?

I would appreciate any advice.

I htink I might see a potential problem for you. At this level, people start running instances with good drops. Gnomeregan, for example, will drop a good dagger and cloth boots (at level 44, I still have my cloth boots that require level 27). Then you get to SM... well, the Aegis of the Scarlet Commander will be on every tank's wishlist, so shields won't sell well until you get into the mid-40s or higher.

There are good quest rewards around this level from instances (Serenity Sword and Bonebiter, I believe are from the SM quest), so one-handed swords and two-handed weapons (where axes are more commonly used than maces) will be tough to sell as well.

Plate armor should actually sell pretty well, as at level 40, Warriors and Paladins want to scramble to get it. However, only plate armor of "good" types sell well: Bear, Tiger, and Eagle (Which I believe is Stamina/Int; it's what a good non-Retribution Paladin should wear). Other than that, plate armor may be difficult to sell.
