Making stuff sucksFollow

I'm a level 28 rogue who just gave up on leatherworking because after all that effort, the only items I could make were crap that I would have spit on at level 8. If I'd taken all the leather I wasted making the equivalent of those pocketbooks we used to make at summer camp and sold it instead, I would have had the money to buy some really good swords and kill a lot of monsters*.

Upon reading some leveling-up guides for various skills, I get the impression that the making skills are better at higher levels, while the gathering skills are better at low to medium levels. And that the turnaround point is roughly level 45. And that there's no reason you can't start out with two gatering professions, and later ditch them and start learning making trades like leatherworking or engineering. By the time you're a level 45, you can scoop up the beginner's raw materials with little effort.

Comments?

*Come to think of it, if I'd taken all the time I wasted at summer camp and spent it working at Piggly Wiggly instead, I would have had the money to buy a really cool car by the time I was 17.

true, but do you really wanna backtrack SOOO much?

do you want to be lvl 45+ and spend untold amount of time farming the newbie zones?

blizzard did a great job at pacing your level gaining with the tradeskill progression, by placement of required tradeskill items.

Trust me I made that mistake at about level 35 I said "well mining/skinning isn't making as much money as I would like it to" so I dropped skining and went back to blacksmithing (previously leveled to about 115) and have now stuck with it and I am at about 160 now and it does suck for some reasons but overall it provides me with some nice cheap greens to disenchant with my alt and some nice money from the AH (green iron hauberk) so stick with it and you will have fun and be an asset to your guild.

All I can say is count your blessings. If you think this sucks, try EQ. At least with WoW once you gather all the stuff and hit the little 'make it' button you don't have to worry about some silly failure rate 'cause you're not high enough level.

WoW tradeskills are E-Z.

Imo, if you plan on just leveling up the one class and don't think you'll be playing the others, then taking up two gathering professions is probably the best way to go. They are a pain to catch up, but don't really take too long.

I had skinning/leatherworking on my hunter from the word go. Even though the leatherworking did not benefit my hunter after the Tough Scorpid stuff (Dragonscale is ok, but it's a pain), I decided to keep leathercraft with him and take it to 300 anyway. I did this because I knew I wanted to level rogue and druid alts. Having a level 60 hunter with 300 leathercrafting in the family helps tremendously when leveling a rogue or a druid. For example, when I want a deviate scale belt for the rogue I take the hunter, massacre wailing caverns and make one.

So it really depends on how you intend on playing the game.

I do recommend mining/engineering for paladins though. Paladin has no ranged attack so dynamite, exploding sheep etc etc come in very handy . . . and are a LOAD of fun.

No crafting proffession realy helps you at low levels except alchemy (my level 12 alchemy alt is running around with 30 healing potions)
They do get interesting however after level 35 (when you can train them to 300) and with rare instance dropped recipies/plans.

I've heard if you're too worried about reaching the higher levels, wait until you're 40 to learn your professions. GM's have said that the professions only take you longer to level. The only thing I hate about waiting until you're 40, is that you have to go back to noobville and collect things you need for the prof.
Unless you take up tailoring and enchanting.
You can buy cloth at AH easily. With enchanting you can just go to Deadmines solo and get a bunch of greens/blues from there and DE them.

If you choose to wait until you're 40, it might take you a week to catch up to where you want to be.

Come to think about it, either way you go, you probably mgith come out even in the end..

i am mine/smith

and i get so frustrated with smithing.

i find it too expensive/time consuming to level my skills in smithing

basically for the reason that to make an item that will gain u 1 smithing SP....u may need 20 copper, 1 malachite, 5 light leather .

and cosidering it taked ages to get that much ore, and ore/bar is severely overpriced in the AH compared to vendors, i ifnd its just not worth it. but i do it anyway, i make the item, and it sells for peanuts. IMO the money in smithing lies in the higher levels.....and its just too expensive to get to the higher levels.

pfffff to crafting proffs. thinking of taking up skinning, but dunno how financially well you do out of it.

My main started out with leatheworking/skinning and managed to build her skill by skinning what she and a friend killed. She kept herself and the hunter friend in armor appropriate to their levels. If that bores you, then gathering is definately the way to go. My friend doesn't like doing them so he gathers leather for me and ore for a pally friend who does armor crafting. We keep him in decent gear. It makes for a great team effort.

I agree that tradeskills are much more fun and beneficial than those associated with EQ.
