I'm new to WoW (just came over from FFXI) and have some questions about engineering that I hope someone will be kind enough to answer.

Basically, I've decided that I want to play as a Gnome because I love the mechanical racial mount that they receive as well as their bonus to engineering, which I want to level. I would like to some day be able to use the most unique engineering items, like the Gnomish Shrink Ray and Net-O-Matic. My first question is: does it matter what class I choose to play if I want to be able to use these high-end engineering items? It seems to me that perhaps a Mage would not even be able to equip these items, or if they can would not have much of a use for them. If I want to be an engineer, should I choose Warrior or Rogue instead? I don't want to level both Mage and Engineering only to realize that they aren't compatible in the least. I wouldn't mind leveling Warrior or Rogue instead if it meant that I would be able to use the more unique engineering items to their fullest potential.

I guess at the end of the day I just like the idea of gizmo-using Gnome (I love the eccentric characters and the silly-looking gadgets) and I want to play the class that is going to allow me to do that.

Also, if someone could tell me where to go to begin training as an Engineer and what to do to get started that would be very helpful (I was hoping for some useful stickies in this forum, but no luck).

Thanks much.

Any class can be any profession, as well as any specialization within that profession (ie. Armor-smith, elemental leatherworking, gnomish enginering, etc.)

Most classes will be able to benefit from engineering in some way (my personal opinion is that shamans won't benefit as much because they can innately do a good deal of the neat tricks engineering items can do).

Mages, in particular, should benefit from engineering for the res-ing ability granted by jumper cables and the net-o-matic (for when your ice nova is cooling off and you get that extra add). There are lots of "novel" things enginers can do that are nice to have for any class, like the repair bot.

When choosing a profession, you can't make a "wrong" choice if the profession is fun for you.

All major cities have places for you to train in almost all skills. I know that some, such as Darnassus, the nightelf capital, don't have (well the guard did not show it) anything for engineering. Being a gnome, Ironforge would be the place to go for past about level 75 in engineering. Generally, starting areas also have people in various places to train. For a gnome, or a dwarf, go to a building at Steelgrill's Depot, there is an engineering trainer there, as well as a mining trainer, which is commonly trained with along with engineering.

Ya, the only requirements on engineered items are generally a specific level of engineering, not class requirements

I think engineering is great for all classes. Dynamite, exploding sheep, good headgear at level 10, Gnomish Universal Remote, Goblin Jumper Cables, mechanical pets, target dummies etc etc etc. That's just a ton of fun stuff for anyone.
