Skinning QuestionFollow

I currently took up skinning and am a bit confused. I currently have exactly 100 skinning skill, and my leatherworking is 100 as well. To go up in LW, I now need medium leather instead of the light leather. My question is my chances of getting medium leather based off of the level of the beast, or is it based off the level of my skinning skill? If it is based of the skinning skill, can i get medium leather off of any level of beast? Any info would be great, thank you!

it's possible to get medium leather for skinning off mobs. most common medium leather drops for me came from crocs in the wetlands. if push comes to shove, you can always get the recipe for medium leather from a trainer. i believe it's 4 light leathers make a medium leather. then 4 medium leathers make a heavy leather.

What you skin is based off the mob and the mob's level. You can get medium level off level 15s, but it's a really low chance; once you get closer to 20, it starts to become more common, and by 25 you'll hardly ever get light leather, and probably start hitting heavy. Hides work the same way, so far as I can tell, but you have a much smaller chance of getting a hide than of getting leather.

Skinning skill is just for what level monster you can skin, and how likely you are to not fail skinning it.

just keep levelling up and as you go to new areas, you'll meet new monsters that give you the skins you want to be working with.

at one time i had wondered if i could get more "light leather" with a better skinning skill. but unfortunately this doesn't seem to be a factor..generally you'll get 1 skin every time regardless of your skill. you occcasionally will meet huge monsters where you might get 2 out of them but this is not dependent on your skill.

ya im nto sure what triggers getting more then 1 skin off of something but it does happen. anyway if you really need a higher lvl skin but your not strong enough to get it yet just transmute it with the light leather to med leather skill. it wastes a lot of leather but can get you that extra med u need

A better "transmute" exists at the auction house for many trades like this ;)

You want medium leather?
You start getting more and more as you get higher, like they said. In the meantime:

Sell all the light leather at the Ah.
Take that money, buy all the medium leather you can.
Be surprised at how much you could buy.

This was my level 60 priests "thorium" farming method:

1) No thorium to be found virtuall anywhere, even with lots of hunting.

2) Farm badlands at odd hours when I was on, sell all the stones, iron bars and mithril bars at the AH.

3) Buy a whopping ton of thorium bars with that money, in less time than it would take me to run all over for a couple thorium bars.

You might find this useful:

Find an area you want to hunt in and look for an animal with a reasonable chance of providing the appropriate skin.
