Question about Mining/Engineering.Follow

#1 Nov 24 2005 at 10:19 PM Rating: Decent
I'm a level 19 Tauren Hunter, currently with a level 94 Mining and 61 Engineering. But... I'm hearing from alot of people that I should drop Engineering for now and pick up Skinning.. And then take up Engineering again later on when I'm at a higher level. What should I do?

Engineering is a real money drain, but so much fun that at level 60, I wouldn't be without it now. Everyone loves an engineer, from jumper cables to res a wipe, to repair bots, and so many trinkets and bombs.....

To answer the question, I took mining and skinning all the way to lvl 40, bought my mount, then used the money left to up engineering to the max, it worked for me. It was however boring as hell grinding it up to 300!!

But if you enjoy engineering, just go with it dude, it will never make you much money, but it's your game, play it how you want and make the most of it.

Aaaaa the green eyed monster Greed, sure if money is your ONLY concern then ya, by all means, become a money factory. Things to keep in mind, Money cant buy everyting, just lots, If you take up a dule gathering style you can always buy guns that others make, now the real quesion, do you want to take your already limited bag space(hunters and their Ammunaion bags)to trott arround getting skins/hides/stone/ore/gems thats 5-10 bag slots if their are diffrentkinds of nodes/skinning results.

Dule gathering is a good way to go if as a player you know Exactly what is going on(i usualy make my first toon on a server a tailor and my second is a gather. Something is missing in being a gather, as a Hunter it is the extra dammage form crafted shot(sure you could buy it, but would you? or would you just horde the money).

I think think it unwise to rush in to the dule gathering on you very first toon, you need some time to ajust to the ingame economy, and to figure out whats happening, honestly gold is eazy to come by, their is not a need to go nuts over it.

Engineering is only a money drain if you cant find the ore yourself; I've never had much trouble supplying my engineering and I started at lvl20. The problem is that you'll be making utter rubbish for quite a while, and wont be making any money. The items you make later on however are an absolute godsend in PvP; Nets, Death/Shrink Ray, stun bombs, attack trinkets, and the Hyperradiant Flame Reflector is an MC farmer's dream. I find engineering to be an enormously fun way to play the game, and mining necessary to support it, but it makes you poor. Pretty simple :)

On all of my characters, I don't care what class, I take Engineering. Why? Because you can buy everything else.

If you're an Engineer and you need an enchant, you can buy it.
If you're an Engineer and you need a potion, you can buy it.
If you're an Engineer and you need a piece of armor, you can buy it.

If you're NOT an Engineer and you need a piece of Engineering, sure you can buy it, but it's not like you can do much with it. Most Engineering (Read: The most useful items) require the Engineering skill to use.

Except for a few exceptions here or there (BoP Blacksmithing, Leatherworking, and Tailoring items) you can buy just about anything you want. Besides, most of the BoP items you can craft are usurped by end game content eventually.

As for my other primary profession I usually do Mining. With a Hunter I might make an exception and go Skinning/Engineering. I do this because Hunters are typically not my first character I'll be making on a server, alowing me to already have some liquid, a regular income, and ore on another character. Also Hunters have the wonderful ability to Track Beasts which makes Skinning ever so fun and easy.

If you can make a profit elsewhere, Engineering is the greatest tradeskill, in my opinion.
