Hey, I was wondering if engineering is a good trade, my cousins said it is and I only picked it because of my hunter. So my question is does engineering net any profit.

The only people who will buy your crafted engineering items are other engineers (who can always just craft the items themselves), thus you're not going to net much profit. Nonetheless engineering is a pretty cool profession and provides other, non-monetary oriented, perks.

Engineering is UBER FUN! You wont make much money off of it, but the first time you use that Gnomish Mind Control/ Universal Remote is a momenous occasion. Plus, people will buy your scopes, guns, or even the occasional stack of EZ-thro dynamite or Ornate Spyglass. You wont make a huge profit, but it is by far the most fun profession

I think I've found myself wasting more money than I've earned from Engineering. But once your skill is up pretty good you can make some really sweet stuff. I love making little sticks of dynamite. It's a blast! <-----LoL..Get it? Blast!!...Ok, I'm done here...

I love my Engineering. I love my Thorium Grenades (explosives that can be used WHILE RUNNING, giving a 3 sec stun and about 500 fire damage), Flawless Arcanite Rifle (costs about 300g to make and sells for about 400g), Ultrasafe Transporter (teleport to Gadgetzan), Thorium Shells (a slow but steady profit through the AH, Gnomish Mind Control Cap (a right laugh in Gadgetzan and a PVP confuser), Field Repair Bot 74A (a portable vendor and repair bot that is utterly lovely for ZF, MC and any other long instance), Ultra-Flash Shadow Reflector (something nice to wear in BWL) and half a dozen other trinkets and toys that add a bit of fun to the grind.

My assumption is that this is some canned awnser you got form somebody. The truth can be much diffrent than this. Firstly making money with engenering, It helps to be a hordie, Deadly Blunderbuss can be made at a low level, and they are needed for the quest warsong supplies, the reward is a nice blue item, everything else on the quest is farmable, but a engineer has to make the gun, I keep one or two up on the AH at all times, Being a Lock i didnt need mount money, but have been to 60 a few tiems so i know what that my guildies needed some help, i poneyd up 200 gold at level 40, and i would eazly say that that was 300 deadly blunderbuss i sold to get most of that money, 75 silver to one gold, sell like hotcakes, 40 copper and 10 medium leather as well as a few stock items, you can trun a profit even if you buy on the AH for those guys. As you move up the gryrothingy that is needed in the badlands for the Niftystopwatch quest, 50-75 silver, they sell as well as blunderbuss, but even faster, they have low mats, and sell well, my kind of recipe. Scopes, theese always sell starting at accurate+3 I can sell them for 1.75-2 gold a pop.

PvP items
Not all calsses can see far away, like hunters or shaman, and to some extent priest, for the rest, their is the ornate spyglass, them their buggers sell for 1-5 gold, higher when AV is on holliday, folks love it(the spyglass) thier.

EZ-throw and EZ-ThrowII, for BG, i cant get enuff of this stuff for rogues/pallies(on alliance)/mages(you can throw while running, free AoE). Heck I dont care who buys it, but it flys off the shelf.

Hint, some explosives sell A OK to vendors, it has been a while but it is either the iron handgrenade(less likely) or the big iron bomb(i tink thats it)

The final awnser, is if you are looking to make piles of money, drop engineering and take up skinning to go with your mining, but Their is money to be made in the profession, if only becasue of the misinformaion that spred arround that the profession is a "Money Sink". so not untold ritches, but I sure have squeesed a cozy life out of it.

PvP is a good reason, 2000dmg to another character from your deathray is pretty nice.

In short, only take up engineering because you think you’ll enjoy making fun toys and explosives. While you can make money with it, there are better ways to make money such as taking two gathering professions.
