Possibly a helpful note here: (On Horde, at least) the highest level leatherworking pattern that a trainer will teach you is approximately level 260. To get to 300 without much trouble, scan the Auction House for these recipes:
- Wicked Leather Headband
- Wicked Leather Gloves
- Runic Leather Bracers
- Runic Leather Headband
These should give you enough steam to hit 300 without any trouble or requiring you to search for some really crazy components.
Additionally, give some thought to what path you will want to choose for Leatherworking. I haven't personally done the Tribal line, but I have two 300 Dragonscale and Elemental leatherworkers. I have to say that the Dragonscale quest was much easier to complete than the Elemental quest, given the availibility of the items and what mobs drop them.
Each line is more geared to a certain utility, and each has it's perks (IE: Devilsaur leather, Black Dragonscale mail, Stormshroud leather). IMHO leatherworking needs a revamp to provide more appealing armor for the wide variety of characters, but you should be able to find a good use for each of them.
