Well money dosent come form producion skills, money comes form selling to folks who do make stuff, this is no breaking news, and as a collector(two gathering skills) you knew that already.
It is kind of confusing how this escapes folks, but here is the breakdown. This is a MMORPG, the key words are Massive Multiplayer not single player, not a few, but the game has a crapload of folks, and in WoW tradeskills are eazy, eazy, eazy. Their is next to no risk(like failed attempts that eat mats) so the reward is low, this should not be a shocker. So their is stuff at the end of leatherowrking that is great, but you are not speical, and since leveling LW is so damm eazy, most guilds have 2-3 of each type(even tiny guilds) so in those cases, they wont be buying any big items form you, maybe some leather you put on the AH, but only a idoit will pay 3-5 gold to have a item crafted when a Guild member will do it for free. selling prufied deeprock salt can make some cash though(terribly consitnaly).
Now dont get to busted up about this, the same holds true for all porfessions, the folks who can afford the mats for endgame stuff(gear/enchants/flasks) usualy are in a guild, one with somebody who can tend to their needs.

This realy depends on you as a person, how you view gaming, and social circles. If you are a single player, with no guild, and intend to keep it that way, or if you are just one greedy SoB bend on making gold, Yes you just Droped the ball. The other way to look at it is that you can aid a guild, and your freinds, as well as doing some crafting of choice peices of armor for yourself.
