I am wondering if there is no cheaper way to get it higher.
Why yes, it is in the sticky, the first thred on this forum. The awnser is not to take up enchanting when you are level 40, try at 55(if your goal is to actualy enchant).
The other soltuion is to get yourself an alt, and start working a tradeskill to melt for mats, I send all my extra cloth to my level 35 mage who is a 300 tailor, with cloth i can craft greens and disenchant them. If i am feeling like fighting beasts, i use my shaman and skin them when done, i craft greens and send them off to be melted.
It dosent have to be you!!!!! so you dont have to have a alt to do it, make a buddy who can craft items out of the cloth you have, and then you Disenchant them. One of the big reasons folks recomend takeing up enchanting at 60 is that the range of instances you can solo is much bigger. As a general rule a instance can be soloed if you have 20 levels on the boss(some instances and some classes are much sooner) so a level 60 can solo there way though SM, and then needs to work with the limits implyed in parties.... they have to share the drops. a level 40 taking up enchanting will sputter out and have to start sharring much sooner, meaning the cost goes up overall, becasue you have to share.
The point that you should have looked in to it before takeing it up at 40 is moot, honestly you are too far in to stop now, you pretty much have to accapt you are a enchanter.
The most imeidate solution is to farm herbs and cloth like crazy and befrend a talior.

i can't really use the maths i get from disenchanting them, because most of the time its just strange dust or magic essence.
This is kind of a arrogant stamtent(not trying to offend), there are a total of 4 enchants from 230 to 300 that do not use a dust or a essencese. complaining becasue you do not get a shard is just rediclous, they are not used as much as dust and esscne. If you want to complain... do it about the type of dust/essence you get, not that they are dust and essnce.

can anyone give me some advise for making good money with herbalism with a skill from around 255?
Stop trying to level your enchanting, and sell mats, dust/shards/essence as well as flowers. kind of stinks you gave up a free gravy train for enchanting, becasue transmutes make me a killing and i dont have to farm or anyting. but the bottom line is selling mats is how you make money.

What herbs sell easily and for a good price on the AH?
the more dangerous the place, the more valuable the herbs are, dreamfoil and icecap are always in high demand..... but you will loose money on repari bills if you try to get them now, seems you just need to level befoer moving on.
