I have a starting NE Hunter. According to the FAQ, I can skin the level of beasts (my skill lvl divided by 5).

But I just got it, so my skill is 1? There are no level 1/5 beasts. ;P

Are there things in the beginning NE area I can skin? With my other toons, I would see 'Skinnable' in the beast desc of a corpse, and it was red (prolly because I didn't have skinning!) But I didn't see that in my beginner area. I think I missed something.

Any help is appreciated! ^.^

hehe...skin creatures around your level...for char levels 1-10 you can get your skinning to 60pts easy...

you also have to have a skinning knife and completely loot the corpse...sometimes very difficult for lower level chars (limited bag space)

Ah, ok, I'll head back to the beginning area then. I was in Auberdine and killed a thistle bear, (lvl 11) thinking I could skin it. Nope. I have the skinning knife, btw, should have mentioned that. :)

Thanks!

You should be able to skin the cats in the beginning NE area.

You have to skin lower lvl beasts to start... the math only works after you level skinning to 100 once it gets to there you can skin level 20 and so on.. before that it's pretty hit or miss

hope that helps :)

If you completely loot the body, when you scroll over it, the little popup in the corner of your screen should say (for example) "Nightstalker Runt - level 11 corpse - skinnable" on three lines, with "skinnable" in color, according to your skill in skinning - grey, green, yellow, orange, or red. This happens whether or not you have a skinning knife or the skinning skill - the word "skinnable" simply appears red if you don't have the skill. If the corpse doesn't say skinnable, you can't skin it - if it does, when you scroll over it the cursor will change to the skinning icon and you click on it just like you were looting it.

Your first skinning attempt will be on an "orange" level of difficulty, and you may well fail three or four times before you succeed. With each success, however, your skill level will rise and the next one will be easier.

I concur that there are not any skinnable mobs in the starting areas (ie: where your toon starts immediately after character creation), there won't be any skinnable mobs until you get out of the starter nook and head towards your first town (you know the one with the prof trainers and the mailbox).

im surprised that no one picked up on this,...

your skinning level cap is 5x your level so when you say you can skin mobs = to your skinning level /5 its the same as your current level... and you can skin some things a little higher and lower ect,..

so basicly you can skin what you kill b/c i doubt you will kill anything higher then 4 levels above you :)

also the 5*you level rule applies to everything skill related such as sword skill axe staff def ect not trade skills or fame ect

well cant really say you doubt he will be killing anything higher than 4 lvls than his lvl, when i was lvling hunter i was sitting killing things 10-13 lvls above my current lvl. So, was skinning things quite higher than me, but then i had 300 skinning at like lvl 35... (back when had skinning/leatherworking as professions)

Actually not true. The math is your skinning level divided by 5, I promise. That's the maximum level of creature you can skin. But this math doesn't apply until you're Skinning is Level 100. Prior to that, you can skin the lower level creatures to skill up.

Also, you will never fail completely at a skinning attempt. If you fail, try, try again. You'll succeed at one point.
