To smelt or not to smelt.Follow

#1 Feb 21 2007 at 3:44 AM Rating: Decent
So I picked up skinning and mining for my two professions and I'm in a jam./ I dont know wether to smelt the ores I get and sell them in AH as bars, or to sell the ores. I think the ores would sell better because other people would want to get their skill up as well. I was also thinking of going half and half. Any opinions on what I should do?

I think you should study the prices of ore versus smelted bars on your particular realm.

Smelt until you don't gain skill points in mining any more, then sell ore on AH if it sells for more (might not be the case).

Raw ore of base metals appeal to jewelcrafters for prospecting and can be used by other crafters (such as Blacksmiths and Engineers) if they have Mining to a sufficient level for smelting the ore.

Bars appeal to all blacksmiths and engineers, especially if they don't have Mining (or haven't skilled up sufficiently yet) or if they're short on time (or lazy...). Some bars will also appeal to jewelcrafters who are not miners, for example when doing the 1-300 levelling of jewelcrafting you need bars for items like Mithril Filigree and Thorium Setting. I'd suggest going half and half until you get a feeling for demand.

Dark Iron Ore requires special consideration. It's used in two quests, one is the repeatable reputation quest for Thorium Brotherhood and the other is the warlock epic mount quest. It's also a pain to smelt (requires a trip to BRD), takes 8 ore for 1 bar and most of the items that bars are used for are obsolete. Personally I would always sell ore, not bars.

Note that uncommon metals (silver, gold, truesilver and eternium) cannot be prospected and isn't used in any quests. It may as well always be sold in bars.

Dude hit the nail on the head. Everytime I have a stack of ore, I check the CURRENT AH prices vs the CURRENT AH prices for the bars. Whichever is listed as higher I will do that one. It may change from day to day too, so I wouldn't get locked into one way or the other on any particular ore/bar. Take your time at the AH and investigate a little.

Alright, thanks for the help. I'll be checking the AH regularly.

I find it depends on the time of the week. During week days ore is generally more expensive while on weekends its cheaper on my server (from memory, might be the other way around), either way, if you can find a trend stick to that. I but I generally smelt until there is no more skill to be gained until I start checking the pattern.
