Cookers advice - any money to be made?Follow

#1 Mar 21 2007 at 1:21 PM Rating: Decent
I have started to focus on getting my cooking skill up. Currently pushing 180. Has anyone else out there had any luck selling cooked items in the AH? I once sold some cooked sagefish on a whim, but never really thought about selling as a money maker.
Any advice out there on this?

Unless you're selling extrememly rare recipes on the AH, like Winter Squid (the squid can only be fished in the winter months), No, you won't make much money.

Use cooking for the buffs. It's amazing what the stamina/spirit can do until you get the Outlands recipes

Cooking can make you ALOT of money, i make 10-15 gold a stack of certain foods from outland

As I've seen it, there are a lot of lazy ppl out there who don't use/make food, so if you lvl higher, then make that stuff like the pet food and those great stat foods, I think there's money to be made there. Some guy was selling pet food and some higher up stat food at like 5g per stack and it went pretty fast. Fishing seems to make more money than Cooking does, out of the secondary skills.

Sagefish Delight seems to sell fairly well on my server. I haven't stayed after it consistently, but when I get around to fishing up a few stacks they always sell over night for 4-5g per stack.

Last time I sold any was before TBC - so your mileage will probably vary.

I make decent money from dragonbreath chili, about 2-3g profit for stack of 10 and thats buying mats from the AH.
No idea why people pay that much though.

Well I guess I should have been more specific. Yes, of course I know about Savory Deviate and I do sell it when I catch. I was looking more toward the "food" items with the buffs.

I've sold various foods, but I really don't think people look for them much. Any more, I just eat it myself or give it out to guild mates and folks I PUG with.

Of course, making money isn't something I fret about anymore. Nothing left to buy.

Maybe if they make a 10,000 gold super-epic flying mount...

I thought about adding Dragonbreath chili. The problem is that not many people go to the AH actually looking for food. That makes sales sporadic, and you end up wasting a lot of gold on AH fees for re-listing, or finally giving up and just vendoring the food. Deviate Delight is the exception, because it isn't really food - it's a disguise.

Of course theres money.

Food sells better if you have time to sit and spam in town. But yes a few foods make money.

As mentioned the deviate delights and dragonbreath chili. I can buy the small flame sacs and mystery meat off the AH and still make 2g profit.

I do it in a small amount as there isn't big demand for it.

Nightfin soup, smoked sunscale, cooked winter squid etc... but chances are the fish sell just as good or better uncooked.

As mentioned returns from AH are a problem.

Cooking is that thing that nearly anyone can level up to at least 300 (dunno what its like in Outlands, post 300) fairly easy.

Cooking is a skill everyone can level regardless of craft, which creates less demand.

Its more a DIY thing, than anything really.

And yes, I'd wager that UNcooked fish would sell better than cooked. Why? Because some people (like me!) buy uncooked fish to cook myself to level my cooking. I then use that said cooked fish while levelling. I used to regularly scan the AH for that Cod when I was in the 40s. It did nicely to level my cooking 40+ levels lol. Paying 1g for 40 levels of cooking and food to last 5+ levels? Heck yeah.

Outland recipes sell well especially those with sta buffs. But don't expect to make your epic flying mount money from cooking.

Grilled squid are excellent for opening locked boxes. Just swing one around in any major city and rogues will happily unlock your boxes.

I leveled my cooking up just because it was there, but I always thought it was pretty worthless. Then came outlands with the longer lasting, higher powered recipes. Now I am very happy I spent the time leveling it. Ravager dogs, anyone?

I was able to sell the Outland recipe items (talbuk, clefthoof and basilisk) on the AH when I had these.

Unfortunately, you can't sell a stack for more than 5g. On top of the fact that I save the food for myself. You can make a few gold but you're better off farming or grinding to make that gold.
