staves (wood and metal), arrows (wood, stone, or metal arrow heads), bows (using animal parts and wood), xbows (wood and metal), would all fit into the one category tradeskill that isn't available yet: wood-working or carpentry.

this would have a partner skill of lumberjacking or chopping wood.

due to the heaviness of the log you cut though, with your axe, you can only carry one then you must return to the bank to put it up before cutting more. this is so that it will be a very time-consuming skill just right for all the veterans of WoW to spend time on. just kidding.

Written as a joke to a question about if staves can be made, it brings up a very good point...

Staves, Bows (all kinds) , Arrows (not really a weapon, but falls into the categorie of un-craftable) , are the only none craftable weapons in WoW, why is this???

If these two profs (lumberjacking and wood-working) were added, it would be a benefit to staff using spell classes and people who prefer bows over guns.

So what do u think about this?

Should Blizzard make a prof to craft these weapons and a gathering prof to get these mats?

If so, what should the names be and what should the profs entail?
And if not, reasons why, or just flame me.

P.S. sorry if this has been a thread before, i just havn't had the time to read the 4286 current threads on this forum.

i say there should be a vendor that will trade in your engineering gun for a bow of the exact same quality and bullets should be done the same way.

I think there should be THREE new proffesions:

Lumberjack (chops down specialized trees ala Herbalism)
Woodcrafter (bows and staves, maybe some fancy "Leather" nature armour?)
Scribe (make paper from chopped wood, can write some books for special abilities, Librams for paladins, OH items for casters, writes scrolls)

Scribe would be my favourite, some sample tomes....

Tome of _____ Skill: increases weapon skill with _____ weapon by ten for _____ hours.

Tome of _____ Mastery: increases that weapon skill by 5 permanently.

Tome of (non-combat buff): gives you that buff.

Tomes with no timer are like crafting recipes: always-active passives under a new tab in the spellbook. They would be non-binding, so as to make it a viable money-making skill.

The woodcrafter would be kind of neat, but not really necessary. Farming would be very area-specific (ever seen a tree in Tanaris?), though, and Simple Wood is already an enchanting reagent. Also, would you create a stack of arrows at once or one at a time? One at a time would be hilarious.

As to the scribe idea that always turns up in different forms -- the form posted here is really unnecessary. It would be like getting every enchant in the game off the AH, plus you would be able to use all the permanent ones at the same time, right?

That's just... enchanting in a way Blizz doesn't want it -- off the AH. Not to mention the already existing "permanent enchant items" like Armor Kits and Spellthread.

The temporary ones would be something between i.e. Wizard Oils and Potions. Not necessary, they already exist.

Buffs that increase Weapon/Defense Skill Rating are currently enchants and set bonuses, if I didn't miss anything. Those enchants are not that good for a reason and set bonuses are a reward for some serious farming. So you had to actually make the mats for those "tomes" (makes me think of Tome of Conjure Water VIII) extremely expensive (way beyond Crusader and such) or the tomes crappy. Hard to level either way.

Fletchers were abundant in EQ, and my favorite tradeskill personally. For them a stack of arrows was 20 if I rememeber correctly, and each combine made 5 arrows. I'd think for WoW, they could do maybe 50 per combine or even a full stack depending on the mats required.

After seeing how popular hunters are, I was quite surprised to not see Fletching as a skill in WoW (especially since guns/ammo are represented already via Engineering).

There should also be wand-making as well.

On that note though, it would be difficult to add wood-working as it would require specific trees that could be cut down, or else wooded areas like Ashenvale, etc would be cleared.

There is Wand Making, in Enchanting. Not very extensive, but they are still there.

There should be more wands in enchanting, a la all the new rings craftable by jewelcrafters. Simple wood being available should not prevent a tree-cutter from using various grades of wood, such as all the different ores available, but now with wood. It could even work out that a woodcrafter can make some white or green wands, and an enchanter enchants it to something else, making it green or blue.

As for clear-cutting an area, games like UO and FFXI worked it out just fine. You chop the tree but the tree doesn’t exactly disappear. It’s a permanent part of the environment.

However, since mining nodes and herbs do appear and disappear, I think it might be possible to do the same with a tree trunk or branch.

In UO, you needed 200 logs/boards and 200 feathers to make 200 arrows. But in WoW, you can make 200 bullets with much less. I think it would be fine to think of many arrows coming from one board. Also with the feathers in mind, now there is more use for all those feathers that we seem to get all the time. Light feather, Vibrant plumes, ironfeather, etc can be useable again in these recipes.

You can carry tons of ore in your bags so I think suspending belief and carrying tons of wood would be OK too.

The only problem I have with the trees either disappearing or not is that there will be very little market in the AH when someone can literally just go to a forested area and chop trees til their hearts content. Hell, they don't even need a map aid, they just walk another 5 feet.... ooh another tree. That is unless there were 'spawns' of trees in random places... which would be a bit weird.
