Enchanting vs. Selling MatsFollow

Fiery Weapon sells for 25g or less on my server. Small Radiant Shards in the AH go for 9g a piece. Funny huh? I've spammed the trade channel over and over and never sold a Fiery for more than 25g. Not only that, but I usually get some guy saying "25g? You're crazy, that sells for 15g all day." So, how do I handle something like that? I need skillups to level enchanting, but I'd actually lose money on every deal if I had to buy the mats on AH.

I've learned to farm SM Armory. I can collect 3 to 4 shards an hour, by running past all the SM mobs, except the few here and there that I have to kill, or that end up aggroing me. I kill Herod, run back out, reset, go back in and do over and over. It's boring, but in about 3.5 hours I can collect enough shards to do 3 Fiery Weapon enchants. The Essence of Fire isn't that expensive; right now it's only about 1 gold. So, for 3 to 4 hours of work I can get 75g, and 3 skillups.

Unfortunately, Fiery Weapon went from orange to green, which means I won't be getting a skillup every time anymore. If I just wanted to farm gold, I could put my 12 radiants up for about 100 gold, and they'd all sell. I'd make plenty of gold, but wouldn't get any skill upgrade.

I'm now at the level for Icy Chill, but I'll have to find out how to farm for those mats, and find out if that enchant even sells, and if so for how much. I've read a little about it, and it doesn't seem as though people have a very high opinion of Icy Chill. I'm gunning for Crusader, as it seems that that is the big one that sells.

Im currently at 271 enchanting, and in the same boat, fiery is still orange for me, and It doesnt sell for the cost of the mats.

Basically what I have been doing is spamming to sell the other enchants I have, (shield-stam, bracers-int, and gloves-stam) for 6g each with my mats. I have had takers here and there, and the mats on my server go for about that much. So really im gaining points and not earning any money from it.

Its worth leveling up enchanting, even though it is very hard - Just keep on trying to sell the enchants you have mats for and hope that eventually someone buys. :)

Most people understand that the mats are expensive for pre-BC spells, not that BC came out. Thankfully im sitting on 80 large brilliant shards for the next step of enchants... They are currently providing me with a strong income as well as when it comes time to level with these spells it wont be a problem.

Just look at the spells currently in your yellow range, gather the mats, and post a price if people dont like it then they wont buy it. :)

I think about all the primals I’m using to level up skills, and it certainly more profitable to sell the mats.

You have to accept that unless you get your own mats the way you do, it’s probably a loss to get them from AH. However, getting them as you did, you have to consider the time involved. There comes a time when it’s not profitable in time or money to farm what you actually need.

Eg, instead of running to the bosses, you probably should have been killing stuff that you can take out, even if you can avoid them. Takes longer but the loot you gain from doing the instance might help your overall financial situation, allowing you to buy something from AH. If the loot you gained gave you 20g, then that’s an extra 2 shards you could buy.

Besides enchanting, what is your 2nd skill? I found that combined with tailoring and d/e the tailor stuff, I didn’t even have to run instances. The occasional item would d/e into a shard, and that would pretty much be what I used to skill up on.

The other option would be that I chose recipes that didn’t use that many shards. Dusts and essences are much easier to get from green gear, which are also much easier to get.

The only way to get around the cost of mats is never to supply them as part of your enchant. If you have the mats, put them up for sale on the AH and offer the enchantment for free (or a very low fee) if the customer supplies the mats. Your profit will come from tha AH sale of mats, not enchantments.

If your customer can't afford the mats, then he can't afford the enchantment. Supplying mats at a loss is stupidity enshrined.

I'm sitting at max enchanting now and the unfortunate part about the skill is that unless you have a really high end enchant (mongoose), you'll never make money actually enchanting.

ohmikeghod is right, don't ever supply the mats. People won't pay for them from you. Offer to do the enchants if they supply the mats, and if they ask if you have them, tell them a price in a tell. I always charge more for my mats than the AH does because 1) some people are just that lazy and 2) I like to have some on hand for the guild. Even if I DO want to sell it with the mats, don't put the price in your macro. Make people send tells to you. This will keep people in trade from going OMG 25g!!?!?!?! NUB!! And it will also keep some other enchanter from spamming the same enchant for 1g less. Just make the macro my mats or yours. If they don't like the price, tell them they can bring their own mats.

You won't make money enchanting. You'll make money selling your mats at the AH. Most servers don't flow with the idea of a "fee" for most enchants. It's nice to put tips appreciated (to keep away the "if it's required it's not a tip" spam) and with that most people make good. Level 70's on my server tend to tip 5-20g depending on how rare the enchant is.

While leveling you're going to have to face the fact that in order to get skill ups you're going to have to eat a lot of mats. Enchanting your own stuff over and over or just giveing stuff away and hopeing you get a tip. Firey and icey aren't the best for leveling, try something with less mats and try just giving it away for free on top of the org bank.

It's a rough skill. Good luck with it.

I am not an expert in enchanting (my highest skill is 225 with a 41 who hasn't been to Uldaman yet) but I learned a few things while raising my skill. I try and make sure that I always have several spells that will give a skill-up and use the one that uses the least materials. While I was enchanting to raise skill I would compare spells(hmmm......3 vision dust or 6 vision dust & a shard for a skill point-not a tough decision) As bluegayle stated earlier, try and find spells that don't require shards. Run instances over and over but don't skip mobs. If the mobs are easy to kill then go ahead and take them out-might be worth it if they drop a green. Disenchant the items, keep some of the essence and the dust and sell the shards. Use the profit from the sale to either buy more dust or greens from the AH to disenchant (whichever is more cost effective and will vary not only by server but time of week, phase of the moon, ect.)Research and look around for spells that give skill-ups for cheap mats (relative to others in that skill bracket) and repeat.
