Mining: Sell Ore or Smelted Bars?Follow

#1 Jul 06 2007 at 11:47 AM Rating: Decent
As a miner, am I better off selling the ore in the AH, or selling the smelted bars? Say for Iron Ore or better.

look at see what the prices go for on your specific server on the AH. I normally do not take the time to smelt the bars and just sell the ore (especially outland ore).

The majority of people that will need the ore can probably smelt it. I don't see any reason to sell a stack of 20 bars of adamantite (40 adamantite) for 20g or a stack of 20 ore of adamantite (20g). Basically double the profit.

you can base it on price atm. eg i just checked yesterday on my server and copper bars/ore were 2g per stack, tin bars 2g/ore per stack. but bronze bars were 1g per stack. and i just needed 20 bronze, not 40, so i picked the bronze instead of making my own.

so while bronze bars are not in as high demand, it certainly sells lower than the coppers and tins together.

as for when you're selling, given that the ore and bar price is about the same, i'd suggest to go with ore. in ore form, any miner can smelt it (for his engineer or BS, which may be the same person). additionally, as ore, jewelcrafters can make use of it. they can prospect it as ore or smelt it to be bars, whichever way they need it.

Sell the ore. If the bars are ever considerably higher than smelt what you have and buy the ore off the ah and smelt that too. However I've never seen this to be the case and the ore is usually higher priced though most of the time the difference isn't much.

I`m to lazy to melt ore. Every ore takes about 2 secs to become a bar. In a stack, that would be 40secs of your life waisted =P A WHOLE 40 SECONDS!

Melt them into bars if they give ANY skill-up what so ever and sell them as ore when they don`t skill-up anymore (gray).

PS: It could be though that bars sell for more then ores or that ores sell for more then bars. Do the research one your server.

When i started my mining skill on an alt, i looked 2 the auction house 2 get ore so i could lvl faster. Smelting giving lvls drops out after i while, so i wouldn't do this for steel+ (maybe iron+)

Agreed. Smelt only as long as you get points for it, and then just sell the ore.

You'll have a bigger market, and anybody who really needs the bars but can't smelt it themselves can always get a friend to do it for them.

Jeah and i believe the ores are used for the jewelcrafters to make them into dust and loot gems etc as well

Sell the ore in stacks of five. Anybody that wants the bars can smelt the ore. Jewelcrafters will want the ore to prospect and need five for that. So its most convenient for all concerned to sell ore in stacks of five.

If you are selling truesilver though it may be worth selling them as 3 bars, they are used for the advanced mining enchant. This is however most likely the only reason it would be worth it too sell the bars and even then its not really worth it, as an enchanter I know this enchant isn't done much. I just thought I would throw it out there.

As others have stated, it does depend on server demand. With my miners I smelt all copper and tin and make bronze bars until I no longer get skillups. The boost in skill well worth the slight loss in the AH due to price difference. Precious metals (silver, gold, truesilver) sell well as bars since they do not seem to be prospected. Smaller stacks do sell faster than larger ones in most cases.

As someone hinted at already about truesilver, sometimes bars are needed for recipies, but sometimes ore is needed.

Thorium ore is useless to high level alchemist/herbalist, but a thorium bar can be transmuted with an arcane crystal into Arcanite by the same person.

Ore is more widely usuable, but sometimes people will need bars from the AH because they lack the mining skill. Search on bars to see how many things use them and factor that info into your decision.

i think selling bars will give u more customers

ppl in engineering/ black smithing/ jew crafting all use bars but only ppl in minin will be able to smelt

if u sell ores, basically ur selling to other miners
