Why do all my enchanting customers either try to rip me off or ask me a billion questions that were answered when i advertised?
I was wondering if this happens alot to any other crafters or do people like to mess with enchanters? Or is it just me?

if the conversation lasts too long for your interests, just dont assist them.
there is not much effort for clicking an enchant...but if you have to explain, talk, buy stuff for someone, it's probably too much work for the time they want from you.
This is why I dropped "enchanting" and now I just D/E things. No matter how blatently you spell it out some people just dont get it. If I said "your mats only, i have none", and you ask me how much for firery(sp)then there is a problem. I just got tired of people asking dumb questions. If I see someone begging in trade for an enchanter, about 25% of the time ill whisper them, but most likely not.
There are a ton of idiot customers, and they will always try to rip you off. Be selective about who you enchant for.
I find the best customers are those ASKING for an enchant in trade channel who have some knowledge and already have mats. If they're looking for an enchanter to do ________, but they dont have mats yet, ignore them. If they DO have mats, whisper them and meet them.
Advertising in trade just means you'll get spammed by idiots. I'd suggest not doing that, and only whispering those who are looking for a specific enchant that they've already aquired mats for.

Similar to what some have said, but enchanting is just one of those professions that a lot of people don't understand. They don't understand because they don't bother to try and learn.
See, when I used to play FFXI, you couldn't just say to someone to go look things up on the web. A surprising number of people played on the PS2 version of the game and didn't have a web-enabled PC at home. People who play WoW have no such excuse.
I don't enchant for strangers very often anymore. If their request in trade doesn't include "have mats", I don't even talk to them. If they include "have mats", I still will only talk to them if they're currently in the same city as me. A couple of nights ago I put up a single blurb in trade for enchants I wanted to do for skillup, provided a prospective customer had mats. Of the three enchants I offered, one was for boots and the other two were for gloves. Five minutes later, I get a whisper from someone, "i heard ur doing wep enchants".

I got so sick of "/2 LF XXX enchant have mats will tip" and when i meet with them to do the enchant they tell me "i have all mats except X shard how much for that?"
My all time favorite one here... theres alwasy that twink in /2 "LF XXX expensive/rep enchant will tip" then they are so generous to put 50s or even 1G!!1!one! in the trade window. Thank you mister twink for your generous donation! Im going to donate it to the furbolg orphanage to help the kids because i made 873,000 furbolg children orphans to get that 15 agi enchant for you to put on your blue dagger you just paid 200G for.
And before i forget the occasional person that thinks their slick putting only half the mats in the trade window and clicking trade
I gave up enchanting for random people long ago and now just do it for my alts and my guild. I could be perma camped for hours on end and still be less frustrated than the examples i gave above.

I have a macro setup for trade channel informing the public at large that I am available for work. I use the EnchantList add on.
My message states for them how to see what Enchs I have available and that all Enchs will be done with their Mats only. I also request that they do not whisper me unless they are ready to proceed with the enchantment.
Any whispers I get that ask anything other than price or a time to perform the enchant ignored.

but to answer your quest, many people don't understand the cost of the enchants they are asking for. linking them the recipe and telling them to buy mats from AH is the easiest solution. if they ask a previously-answered question, just keep sending them the macro'ed message... they'll learn to read.
Trying to make money off of doing enchanting for people is an excercise in insanity - if the person getting the chant doesn't have a chanter as an alt then that person is probably going to be a problem.
Best bet if you want to waste your time doing that is to either keep an eye out for folks requesting specific enchants or advertise that you're doing some rare or high end enchants for flat fees and thier mats (or your mats at a significantly higher fee if its easy to get stuff).

I have never had an enchanting alt or main, I just posted here to let you know that not all cutomers are retards. I look up all the mats on allakhazam first, I get them, then advertise in trade chat, "/2 LF enchanter in IF to do [enchant] my mats, will tip." I tip around 5g (is that proper?) and thank them for the enchant and leave.
I narrow my search down so the enchanters know what Im looking for, because (as a JCer) I hate when people say "/2 LF a JCer" and I whisper them and they ask for a cut I don't have. Advertise what you want, so I know whether to whisper you because I have it, or not to whisper you because I don't have it.

my fave one to date is someone whispering me soon as i logged in and was picking up money from the mailbox. they whisper "has du enchanter?" so i reply a simple "yes". they then open a trade, bung some obscure amount of shards, dusts, essences that could be anything then repeat"has du enchanter"?
i wouldnt feel right just accepting the trade and running off with their mats so i just say "mate tell me what enchant you need so i can check if i have the pattern or not". they close the window, bung in some different mats and some rubbish looking lv 12 dagger, and repeat it. i close the window and tell them if they can't communicate then i can't help them
generally tho i'm more inclined to disenchant for profit and i only sell enchants if i have mats and the person pays. otherwise if they have mats it seems in required to travel 2 continents for a rude person who thinks a tip for my trouble is extortionate. at the start i liked the idea of enchanting as a social profession; it is when you get social people and unfortunely English is my only fluent language. if someone whispers me for an enchant if they aren't pleasent then i just say im going offline/ dont have the pattern/ have dropped it. sorted

I recently had the "best" customer ever...
He asks for a +15 agi enchant to weapon, says he has mats. Opens up trade, gives me mats. Then i see what he wants me to enchant... one of those off hand 17 lb catfish things.... I tell him i cant do it and trade him the mats back. 20 or so minutes pass and he whispers me saying "You (explitive) nubzorz!lololololol i jest got mu (explitive) leetz weap enhcanted! You (explitive) noobs lerns to play da game (explitive) lololol"
(Note: not quite verbatim because i can't remember how many "lolol"s there were)
I did ask him to link it, but had no response. Sometimes this game makes me laugh so much.

I advertised for +40 Spell Damage to weapon - your mats - tips appreciated.
He comes to me - gives me mats - and has me enchant his weapon - and a 25 gold tip!

One minutes later - he comes back to me saying that there had been a mistake, and that the wrong weapon had been enchanted. I'm thinking, "Oh, boy. He wants me to enchant another weapon for free. NOT gonna happen."
Nope. He took the blame - saying he gave me the wrong weapon - his fault.
He went and got more mats from AH - had me enchant his weapon again (Woot! two skill-ups!) and gave me a 2nd tip for my trouble.
If only I had more like him!

I tell him.
The he asks if he can buy the mats off me. No - use the AH - I don't carry mats.
He leaves. A few minutes later, I whisper - "Still want that Enchant?"
He says no - he just wanted to buy the mats off me - and then have a friend do the enchant.
?????

I am currently missing about 3 world drops, mongoose, sunfire and soulfrost enchants but I have all other BC enchants. I don't advertise, but I will answer peoples requests for enchanting (if they don't specify the exact enchant they want, which they should, I check their level first because enchanting for lower levels and/or twinks is usually not worth my time). I then inform them that I charge 15g for my enchant and I get one of the following responses:
But I have mats... (....... seriously? just.... seriously?)
15g tip? (no, its not a tip, I'm charging you for my services)
15g?! That's way too much for a tip (._.;;)
Ok (very rare this one)
In either of the first 3 responses I also add that they are welcome to find another enchanter to do the enchant cheaper and if they change their mind or just don't want to wait then feel free to message me as my offer stands.
More often than not people send me a tell shortly thereafter.
And one more thing, stand firm on your price, don't make exceptions for that guy that "only has 10g" or whatever.
And the last thing, I often find it beneficial to occasionally trade my services for another's services. Sometimes alchemists prefer to pay me in potions or such things. But all in all I found myself much more successful after I decided on a set price and stuck to it, especially now that I have some enchants that are very rare on my server.

As for any business fellas you'll end up with your fair share of customers...this is a game where a lot of people don't read forums and don't know a lot about it...some have jobs families and other things that take a lot of their time...or they are 12 so the business is not gonna be so great...but you do make a lot of money off of it.
