which blacksmith specialty for tank pallyFollow

#1 Sep 26 2007 at 10:57 PM Rating: Good
Started out going weaponsmithing because I had heard that for ret pallies the 2h epic mace is perfect. Now that I'm 70 and realizing that ret pallies are pretty much useless in heroics and of course raiding, I'm thinking I might have made the wrong choice. Now I know that I can easily change my specialty and go with armorsmithing, but is that the best choice? I can make some really nice 1h swords if I decide to go with sword specialty over hammer or axe. Course before I spend my hard earned gold, I'd love some opinions.

No plz dont spec to armor smithing. Its pretty useles for a tank. I, myself have got armor smithing because i thought.... hey im a tank... hm armor sounds tanky so lets do it. But the only tank armor u can make is one lvl 65. Drops are way better esp from heroics.

I suggest u stay in weapon and get fireguard for the necassary hit rating. I c a lot of tanks with that item.

I'm armorsmith too as Paladin-Tank+ and would of not taken Smithing at all if i hadn't spent huge amout of time, coin&resources on levelling this up :-(

JC or Alchemy are much more useful (and cheaper to level? money-makers?) than smithing of any kind i would wager ;-<

If you're still keen on going the Smith route, i'd suggest WeaponSmith of some sort as more classes will have need of them and there's a few wepona perhaps of interest while ArmorSmith has very little gear for any of us really.

Whatever you decide - best of luck

I'd have to agree with staying weaponsmith. Most end-game armor that's good isn't in armorsmith (esp. if you're a pally). Armorsmith primarily benefits warriors, not pallies. Maybe they'll do something more interesting in the next expansion like repairing armor ability.

In this case, I'm also an armorsmith as a tankadin; his smithing is only 265 at this time. Would it be worth my while to switch to weapon smithing, and if so, which specialty?

id say go engineering and get the tankatronic goggles or stay blacksmithing try to get the 2nd upgrade of the armor at least that gives a tankadin the last stand ability that warriors love. Weponsmithing is useless to a pally tank because as a pally tank you want a weapon with a plus spelldamge stat on it. The most popular prekara is the sword from keepers of time rep

You can always choose one or other, learn all the patterns, then UNlearn whichever speciality you chose and pick the other one. You will still keep all the items you made and the patterns from your first speciality.

So you could pick armorsmith, learn all the exclusive stuff, then switch to weaponsmith. Or vice versa, which is what I have just started doing. Doing the weaponsmith quests now, then once I can make the kickass axes, will start on armorsmithing.

No you can't, please don't spread misinformation. Check out the list of recipes here on Alla, to use any of the BoP specialty items, you must BE that specialty.

You can keep the items in your inventory, but you can't use them unless you switch back specialties.

If that is the case, I apologize. I am going from what I read at Wowwiki -

"Changing Specialties
Blacksmithing specialties can be changed at the trainers for a cost. The cost depends on the specialty you wish to drop and the character's level. Once you drop a specialty, you can then choose a new specialty for no cost. Each specialty can only be dropped at the trainer that originally taught it. In order to switch from a Weaponsmithing subspecialty (Axesmithing for example) to Armorsmithing, you must first drop the Weaponsmithing subspecialty, then drop the Weaponsmithing specialty before you can learn Armorsmithing. Once you have earned either the Armorsmithing or Weaponsmithing specialty, you do not need to complete the quest line for the other specialty if you wish to switch. The specialty will be given at no cost."

You can switch specialties and keep the gear, but you can't use the gear unless you're the right specialty. That's true for pretty much all the professions.

My first toon is also a pally weaponsmith. I've lurked here on these boards since before I bought the game, but I am compelled to register and post tonight as a direct result of hearing some variation of this advice repeatedly and fearing that others will stumble into an easily preventable mistake.

At the present time, all blacksmithing recipes that require specialization as a Weaponsmith or Armorsmith result in crafted items that are Bind on Pickup. They are for your personal use only; you cannot sell them on AH or trade them to guildies or do anything else with them. There is no market whatsoever for Weaponsmith- or Armorsmith-crafted items.

It is certainly true that a Weaponsmith or Armorsmith can learn to make several fantastic Lvl 70 epics. Follow the link that ChlKilt provided earlier to see them for yourself. I've spent a lot of time poring over this list for the last couple weeks and now realize that none of them have the INT, mp5, spell crit, spell damage, +healing, or anything else that a Paladin normally wants on his or her epics. I have slowly come to the conclusion that a Pally blacksmith should not bother with completing either specialization quest. At the very most, you should consider setting them aside until you are level 70 and have your epic flyer and can better determine what you really want/need to succeed in the end-game.

At this point, only sheer stubbornness keeps me from dropping blacksmithing and learning a more useful profession. I will freely admit the utter irrationality of this decision :-)
