Simple question about miningFollow

#1 Oct 25 2007 at 2:03 PM Rating: Decent
My troll hunter is level 49 now. His mining is at 260. All I see around me is Mithril, and I really want to start hitting some Thorium. I have decided I'll do a bit of farming.

My question is in two parts:

1) I have heard that a good area to farm Small Thorium Deposits is in a mine in northern Blasted Lands called Garrison Armory. Are there any quests for this zone? How much opposition should I expect to face (i.e. can a 49 hunter adequately farm this mine)?

2) Is there a better place to farm Small Thorium Deposits?

I have found alot of thorium in Ungoro Crater

Well, most of my quests right now are for Un'goro so I'm definitely gonna get some, but I just went around farming mines on my 70 warrior as he's gonna drop engineering soon (largely the reason I want to farm Thorium, as well as get my Hunter to 300 mining before I head to Outlands (should happen naturally but I wanna rig my chances)) and I didn't see many thorium deposits in Un'goro.

most of the time I just run around the outside edge with my 70 pally and by the time I make one circle of the crater most of the time I have 1-1/2 to 2 stacks or ore and 2 or more stacks of the stone

I usually start mining small thorium in southern tanaris and un'goro. Then I move to Burning Steppes for rich thorium

Southern Tanaris? I did a circuit of that region 4 times in a row and found at most 2 Mithril deposits each time. The only Thorium I found was in the insect hives, which really irritate me.

Un'Goro and Winterspring are by far your best bets. I can generally get a stack of Thorium from a circuit of Un'Goro and two stacks from a circuit of Winterspring. However, I don't recommend Un'Goro until 50 and Winterspring until 56, so just keep collecting that Mithril and sell it on the AH Smiley: nod!!

Oh, I'd love to sell that Mithril. But I'm saving it up for when I level engineering on my warrior... :(

Un'goro is where I'm headed after work, but not to farm minerals, instead to level. I'm actually only 9 bars to 50, so I should be able to easily cope as a hunter. I just killed a rare 54 mob in Felwood without breaking a sweat, even with adds.

I'm not talking Rich Thorium, btw, only Small Thorium. I know Winterspring is decent, but like many areas, the best mines are in caves and require fighting tons of mobs. For Rich Thorium, I already know where to farm it. Eastern Plaguelands, where my warrior is parked and where he can get 1 stack in 10 minutes, log off, come back a couple hours later and do it again.

I skilled up most of my Thorium (Small and Rich) in Un'Goro.

For small deposits, the best places are probably from the NW of the crater down to the south to SW. They are normally just off into the rocky areas so fighting lots of mobs shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Another good spot is in Fungal Rock, however, you have to fight your way through a lot of gorillas to get to it. There is a quest in the cave though (to rescue the mechanical gorilla), so it is not a wasted journey.

Silithus' insect hives have plenty of rich thorium. I usually get about 2-3 stacks in 30 mins. Recommended if you're lvl 70 since those bugs are elite mid-50's+.

For thorium I prefer Eastern Plaguelands, Winterspring or Silithus. I like EPL best as the thorium isn't inside caves which tend to require lots of fighting to reach. Winterspring can work out well if you're grinding Timbermaw or Wintersaber Trainer reputation. Western Plaguelands, Un'goro Crater and Tanaris have a mix of mithril and thorium.

I remember mining my first Thorium in that area just south of the path down to Un'Goro where the plant elementals roam. I remember mining a lot of Thorium while questing in Un'Goro both around the edges of the zone and in the center where the lava stuff is. I also mined a lot of Thorium in Felwood just by riding up and down the zone near the rocky edges. Azshara has a lot of Thorium too and very few people farming it but it is a big zone and the nodes are scattered all over the place.

I didn't do much mining in the Eastern Kingdoms but I seem to remember seeing Thorium in every level 50+ zone.

I got most of mine in Burning Steppes...that worked out pretty well for me.

I ended up skilling to 271 on Mithril before I ever saw any Small Thorium. Found a few Small Thoriums in Un'goro and got to 275 easily. I never really farmed Small Thorium, and now I'm at like 282 or something and can mine Rich Thorium easily, so it all worked out in the end.

I saw someone mention getting 2-3 Rich Thoriums in 30 minutes at 70. In Eastern Plaguelands, I can get 4 or so in 15 minutes. Eastern Plaguelands seems like by far the best for me.

If you are looking for Small Thorium Deposits then your best zones to take a stab at are: Silithus, Eastern Plaguelands, Felwood, Blasted Lands, Burning Steppes, and Un'Goro Crater. I'd say for Thorium Deposits in general (not just small) Burning Steppes is the best place to mine Thorium. But since you are only 49, I'd suggest sticking with Un'Goro, or trying Felwood and Blasted Lands. Here's a link to maps of all the zones I just mentioned, it'll tell you where the deposits are for Small Thorium. http://wow.thenoobschool.com/wow-thorium-mining-guide

i think most of the areas for collecting have been covered , the real problem is there are a lot of farmers and the reason you find so few deposits is those that know where they spawn will be running around grabbing them leaving the lower level spawns , the thorium is about but fun and games beating the regular farmers

all you can do is look around the areas and start to remember where you see deposits , if they are not there next time you know someone has beaten you to them
