Changing specializationFollow

I'm just starting to play WoW but i've been trying to give my craftings some priority over the leveling itself, in order to be able to keep up on gear (crafting or buying with the profit from crafting, w/e).

Aparently when you get to a certain level there's the need to choose a specialization. Having chosen one, you cannot craft items from another. If that's correct, lets move along to the questions:

Let's supose that I learned A, B and C items from the specialization and got the crafting to 375. If I choose to change specialization,

1- do I lose the capacity of crafting A, B and C
2- if 1 is "yes" do I lose it permanently and have to rebuy the recepies in case I switch back?
3- does my skill fall back to 300 or stay at 375 but without any recepies known?

Thank you all in advance

1) Yes.
2) Yes.
3) I'm not totally certain but I think it depends on the profession. I know that with Engineering, you have to unlearn the whole profession (engineering) not just the specialization, so you return to skill level 1.

The trade skills FAQ might have more comprehensive answers for 3).

For number three, it depends on what skill you're talking about. You used to have to drop the profession entirely to change specializations but not any longer for at least a few of them.

I can tell you for sure that you just pay gold to change tailoring spec without dropping any skill points. Once you change you can no longer make the items related to the previous specialty and you cannot wear any items you made that require the previous specialty but they don't disappear so you can stick them in the bank in case you switch again.

You can also change leatherworking and alchemy specs, but those are the only ones I know personally. I'm sure you can do blacksmithing as well, just not sure the mechanism.

Ah I see... Thank you very much you 2.

Yeah I was taking Tailoring on one character and Blacksmithing on the other.

For Horde leatherworking, I initially trained in Tribal, then realised that I should have chosen Dragonscale. To unlearn, I had to go back to the Tribal trainer and paid 50g to take that off. Then I went to the Dragonscale trainer who then directed me to Narain Soothfancy in Tanaris (near Steamwheedle Port). He pointed me to a book "Soothsaying for Dummies" which then gave me the three choices of leatherworking to specialise in. So I didn't have to have the mats to specialise for my second choice, like I had to for my first. Of course I had already gathered them.. ah well!

I couldn't find this information anywhere so had to do it the hard way!

I was at 271 leatherworking and didn't lose any points, just the tribal receipes.

I can say with certainty that
engineering
blacksmithing
tailoring
leatherworking
alchemy

do not lose any skill points when you change specializations you just have to pay a fee (usually 50-100g or so I think).

oh and most of the time the way to unlearn a spec is to go back to the trainer that gave it to you.
