I too have been toying with the idea of dropping skinning. I'm a lv 70 rogue with 375 skinning/leatherworking. I used to use skinning to fuel my leatherworking, but now that I am lvl 375 LW and have my BoPs, I no longer have a constant need for skins. Whenever I want to makesomething for profit, I just head over to the AH and buy the mats. If I can't still profit after buying the mats, then it wasn't a profitable item in the first place. Couple that with the fact I don't kill enough beasts anymore (I'm 70, and since we're not raiding in my guild yet, all I do is PvP and farm primals after my dailies), along with the other fact that the least used material in high end LW recipes is leather (lol), I wonder if it is just taking up a profession slot that could be better used elsewhere? I used to get at least a stack of heavy knothide leather a day (that's 60g right there), now I'm lucky to get a stack of regular every 2 days. To be honest, I don't see myself beast hunting in the future, as I generally don't go out of my way to kill them now. So, aside from what WotLK brings, skinning seems pretty worthless to me right now.
So, I was thinking that another gathering profession might be beneficial because I could fly around looking for herbs/ore. I also though about taking up disenchanting, but my warlock alt is an enchanter and will be 35 soon. Although it would be nice to be able to plow through some younger instances and DE all the BoPs.
Another one I was thinking of, however, was alchemy. If I did that, I would most likely aim for transmute spec. I've heard a lot of stories of people getting some nice procs on transmute primal might. This idea seems interesting to me. That could be some nice profit, especially if it were riding crop season and I was transmuting extra mights. Plus, the potion portion of alchemy seems to be fitting for a rogue anyway, considering I keep vials and "herbs" on hand at all times for making poisons. So, do you guys think alchemy is a good idea or should I take up something else?
