Engineering for Mages?Follow

#1 Jan 01 2008 at 9:33 AM Rating: Decent
Just started a Mage as my second/third character. He's a gnome and will be primarily PvE, so I was wondering if Engineering provided any utility or extra damage for a Mage while leveling? Or should I just go with a second gathering profession?

Engineering offers very little in the way of PvE other than the ability to lay down repair bots in raids. Its more of a "fun" profession or one geared more for PvP

You serious? I have no idea how many times engineering's gadgets and bombs have saved my a$$ in PvE, the stun is amazing, no matter what class you are (some classes benefitting more than others, hunters come to mind, but mage's cone + stun gives you precious time to escape) and many of the gnomish trinkets can be real cool too.

Besides, when leveling up casters get a lot of gear that helps them, and is usually better than other stuff around.

And lets not even mention the amazing flying mounts.

Destruction Holo-gogs These are pretty nice goggles for a PVE mage. I'm sure raid stuff will surpass them, but they are nice nonetheless.

I get engineering for twinks, good head pieces, and bullets for hunters. The bombs and explosive sheep are fun. If you are not going to stay low leveled, I would wait. Yes, my mage twink is an engineer 165 skill.

I'm a gnomish engineer(an undead rogue), often heard from ppl that engineering is for pvp, but my " turn-ppl-into-chicken-trinket" and bombs can't be used in arena..sigh..

The absorb damage belt is superb in pvp, but be careful of spell-steal, it will turn the tide.

The only thing good is the goggles and extractor, the rest are just "for-fun-items", waste of money and time. Helicoptors are cool, but netherdrakes are the coolest.. :)

If you've got the money, engineering is the best profession to have while leveling the lower levels.

You've got dynamite & bombs for area damage and stuns, mines for singles, and target dummies for when you're over your head. You also get to get headgear and trinkets earlier than usual.

The goggles are comparable to tier 5.

you wont be replacing them for a while from the time you get to make them.

Are you aware of engineerings..inherent charecteristic?

Certain errr items dont work as intended sometimes.

Your sheild has a chance to amplify damage taken. Almost everything has a chance to explode.

Your poultritizer can turn YOU into a chicken.

Your net gun can net you or just whisp out.

But it doesnt happen that often. Its actually fun having those things aroumd.

are perfect examples. The transporters are exceptions, their actually garenteed to get most of you to your location.

I find Engineering very useful for my Mage. The Holo-gogs are terrific, but the Frost Grenades are even better. I'm Frost spec and the Frost Nova effect of the Frost Grenades help to proc Shatter, which is amazing. So, with engineering, you'd have your Frost Nova, your Frost Elementals ranged Frost Nova, and your own ranged Frost Nova. It's a very powerful Frost Mage ally.

Obviously never played an engineer, eh?

Engineering is great for offensive and defensive even for a mage.

Target dummies alone will save your **** more times then you'll be able to count.

Various goggles are as good or better then alot of cloth head peices you can get.

Then there's high explosives - nothing like a close range AOE stun to save one's backside.

If you've got the patience and money to level engineering (it's not for everyone!), then it's a lot of fun. Target dummies, like the above posters mentioned, are a life-saver! Also, you get various mechanical critters that can fight for you for a short period of time (your very own pet!), like a dragonling or battle chicken. You can't make much money in Engineering. Some things sell well sometimes, but not always. I usually have good luck selling scopes and the various guns. But lately the guns and higher-level bullets have not been selling on my server. Once you get to Outlands, the Mote Extracter is just about the coolest thing ever! And all the different goggles you can make are often nicer than what you can find at that level. As a Rogue, I don't care for the bombs 'cause it draws too much aggro, but lots of people do like them.
