meta gem questionFollow

so for the relentless earthstorm diamond, I'm told that I need 2 reds, 2 blue and 2 yellow gems. Now my question is, does it matter whether it's just a standard (green) gem such as you'd get from mining or consortium rep or does it need to be a (blue) gem like nightseye or living ruby?

The gems needed are gems that can be socketed into your equipment. A gem will tell you what socket it matches. Also, the rarity of the gem doesn't matter (Lustrous Zircon is white, Lustrous Azure Moonstone is green, Lustrous Star of Elune is blue, and Lustrous Empyrean Sapphire is purple).

Not sure if the gems from high levels of consortium reputation give gems that can be socketed, but the low levels of consortium reputation aren't able to be socketed as far as I know.

EDIT: spacing mistake

well, you can't put raw gems into your gear... I mean you wouldn't get any of the bonuses!

and to quickly answer your question, if it requires two reds and two blues you can do two purple gems and get both of those taken care of, same with two greens or oranges.

When I need gems for gear, I go to a gem dealer and buy the ones for 2 gold. Until you start getting your epic set, save money as you will replace it soon enough.

THe better blues are worth the higher price gems. Not the ultimates but the intial rares

Better blues are the best quest/drops you'll have before going into kara.

Dont know pvp wise, what stuff deserves better gems. Outside of pvp epics.

Depending on your server's economy, this can be actually more expensive than just buying out green quality gems off of the AH.

Some green quality gems on my server (US Stormscale) go for anywhere from 1g to 3g. Now of course there are offdays, but it's always good to just take a look at the AH to see if you can find some cheap gems. And green quality gems are much better than the "vendor gems" that you can buy.

Agreed. I wouldn't waste 2g on a vendor gem on my server when the better (green) ones from the AH are less than 2g usually.. It all depends on server, but with the fact that a lot of the green raw gems go for pennies on the dollar contribute to this.

A lot of gems on my server are around 1g for the green quality gems. While I do agree that you should buy the cheaper gems until you get into heavy raiding content, you should be smart about what you buy.

Indeed. Until I have the gems I want for my new spellstrike hood, I´m using for a few days green 7 spell damage gems bought for 3/4g from the AH. The blue +9 ones would have been 40/50G.

Also to the OP (and I'm sorry if this was posted already) while the gems have to socket match for the meta to work, a purple (color not epic) gem will count as either a red OR a blue gem when you socket it, depending on the socket. this allows for greater meta veratility.

You can satusfy the demands of the relentless earthstorm with 3 gems.

1 purple (counts as blue and red)
1 green (counts as blue and yellow)
1 orange (counts as red and yellow)

This may not be the BEST thing for you to do depending on your class and what stats you need, but it does allow you to get the gem equirements out of the way so you can socket the rest of your sockets however you want.

PS You do not NEED to put a blue gem in a blue socket. However, if you don't, you will not get the socket bonus for that item. You will have to weight the socket bonus against the gem stats and decide if it is worth gemming for the socket bonus.

The cost difference on Zul'Jin between green and blue is over 55g. That 55g extra buys 1 spell hit/spell dmg per slot which does add up but is only worth it if you get some nice long-term gear.

You could satisfy it with two prismatic spheres if you had to.

You could, but that would probably make you a sad panda for using 2 gems with absolutely no usable stats.
