All right, so I've been looking at the FAQs, forums, guides, etc., and I'm thinking about dropping my Alch and Herb for BS and Mining.
Right now my alt is a lvl 42 Shammy with 245 Alch and 225 Herb. I'm toying with the idea of eventually becoming a Weaponsmith (being able to both make my own weapons and sell them).
Now, I do use potions and stuff, and I could probably make a whole bunch before dropping the professions, but I like the idea of being able to make my own weapons (when I get to that level).
Would it be a good idea for me to do this? I would like to make some money off of it, as well. Or would my making pots and whatnot be more beneficial in doing so.
Any advice would be great. Thanks!

My personal opinion:
Mining+BSing is a huge money sink. You will spend a ton of money leveling up blacksmithing and very little money can be made from it (as far as I know). I would personally just go for drops instead of leveling up a profession to have easily replaceable weapons from PvP.
Also, at a low level like that (42) I would wait until your mid-60s when you have the money to drop on a profession (after you have the money for epic mount + flyer imo).

That's what I was thinking about. I used to have Engineering on my main but it was nothing but spend, spend, spend. So I dropped it. I mean, so far Alch and Herb hasn't been a money pit at all... maybe I should start selling pots and elixirs, as I've mainly been making them for myself and guildies.
Try selling herbs too. You can make really good money doing that.

Yeah, that's what I'm doing with my main right now. Since I dropped engineering, I took up mining to sell the ore/bars. Haven't been working on it though, since I've been working hard to get to 70. =)
lol - I'm in the same situation. My main is lvl 67, and I'm trying to get to 70. However, my BS skill is still at lvl 225. I just can't justify taking the time to level BS while I'm so close to 70......especially since nothing I make will really help me (Holy Pally). Once I hit 70, I should be able to farm mats and level up quickly and cheap.
That and the fact that you're not worried about working on levelling your character and stuff and you can just merrily farm away. (Just hit 67 too last night =D)
The sellable weapons in BS aren't that great. The good stuff, the reason people take up BS nowadays is the BoP stuff which won't make you any money.
Haven't had a lot of experience here, but here's my 2 cents: My main has LW/Skinning. For most of the way from 1-40 I was po'. Dirt po'. I managed to hit on a few good money making methods during that time, but I still had barely enough for my mount at lvl 40.
My primary alt is only lvl 24, but with herbs/Alch, he's already got over 30G int he bank and climbing. This combo seems to be a very good way to make fairly easy money. The fee action pots sell like hotcakes on the weekends when everyone needs them for BGs and arena matches. It helps if you also spend some time leveling up fishing since some of the better potions use fish-derived stuff (like the blackmouth oil).

I am just leveling up my first alchemist now so I don't really know how much gold it makes. Blacksmithing will cost you tons of cash, and a lot of time if you try doing it as you level. A guild buddy of mine is doing the Mine/BS combo. He is level 68, doesn't have much cash, and is still only 285 BS. All the cool weapons and armor you make for yourself won't get any of your gold or time back and they will be obsolete as soon as the WOLK greens start dropping. Potions and herbs will both sell. If you really want BS stuff, then take mining, keep herbalism, and stockpile your ore, sell the herbs for cash. When you are 70 and have a good amount of gold, you can drop herbalism for BS and powerlevel it.
Okay, thanks for all of the advice everyone. I've decided to keep Alch and Herb. It does make fairly decent amount of money, plus the fact that I tend to save up ever copper I can (so that helps a bit).
And the pots are definitely useful (especially health and mana), and I'm positive (as one of you mentioned) that whoever is in BGs or whatnot, would buy them quickly.

Yeah, I don't plan on using BS for much for myself. Mostly to help guildies (and my alts) level up. I never realized how good the BS armor and weapons are for leveling up. Obviously not as good as twinkie gear, but much better than most other gear out there.

Guildies kept asking me to craft items for them. I began telling them that they should bring me the mats, which I would then sell on the AH, so I could then use the proceeds to buy them the item they originally wanted. :-)
This is one of the only ways to make a substantial profit through bsmithing (and I presume through most other crafting professions as well). The best stuff you can make is BOP. Almost everything else of interest is available from the Auction House or in /2 chat for less than the cost of materials.
If you really want to switch to blacksmithing, I strongly recommend that you first look at the potential items you can learn to craft and decide if any of the BOP items you would be able to obtain are worth using (over quest rewards/static drops). Especially since you can also "pick" some of the mobs there lol.
Making money is just somewhat important to me, because as you practically said, once you get to the higher levels, making money is easy.
Heck, with my main being a rogue, I open lockboxes for tips (when I have nothing better to do) and can easily make quite a few gold opening only a few.
Getting to 375 herbs truly is stupidly easy. It is possible to walk into Hellfire with 350 herbalism and walk into Zangar with 375. To be honest, getting Alchemy to 375 is also the easiest crafting profession to get there. I spent maybe 400 gold on herbs to go from 300 to 375.
Stay with what you've got; that way if you ever decide to heal the Alchemist's stone is likely the best healing trinket you'll ever come across. 40% increased effectiveness in potions used could make or break certain fights, especially mana intensive ones like those in ZA. Dreamless sleep potions with the Alchemist's stone can also help you out a lot if you go elemental as well - 12 seconds of allowing the tank to catch up on threat while regenerating somewhere along the lines of 5500 MP...

Sporeggar rep also sells "Recipe: Transmute Primal Earth to Water" once you're revered. Primal Earths are cheap on most servers and Primal Water sells for about 4x. My server they are about 5g to buy Earths, and about 20g selling Waters. Transmute master would give the additional chance of making even more money with this X-mute.
Greatest $ would come with a 5x mute: Turns 5g into 100g.

I find earth to life very profitible. Life is a sure sell and worth loads on my server. enchanters chew that stuff up i think.

As long as you choose a crafting profession, be prepared to stay poor (at least until you get to Outland and can start making more gold from quests and drops.

There's a 23 hour cooldown, so you make 15g every day with this transmute, plus potentially much more if it transmute mastery procs. That's great money from an alt you log into for about 5 minutes a day.
On the other hand, my main can get 3-5 motes of water every five minutes or so of farming Zangarmarsh with engineering, then swing around to Nagrand to fish the pools there for more motes, grabbing motes of wind on the way, plus any adamantite or fel iron around.
Alchemy's profitable, but it's not a profession you need on the characters you play all the time.
But won't everyone take engineering and do this. Driving down the cost of those things harvested?
