Dropping mining for alchemy?Follow

#1 Jan 16 2008 at 8:10 PM Rating: Decent
I'm thinking about doing it. Currently I'm herbalist and miner. Lvl 34. Have enough gold for a mount. Will I be missing out on a lot of gold later that I wished I had from mining? Making gold is the only reason I am thinking about keeping mining. Let me know what you think.

Yes.

Will it be gold that I really need? Or can it be made just as easily other ways?

If you are looking for money, drop herb instead, and grab (dis)enchanting.

If you really REALLY want alchemy, okay drop mining, but you WILL have much less gold.

OR you could buy herbs for alchemy with mining's money.(2nd choice, its kind of dumb though)

What's your motivation for training alchemy? You have one reason for keeping mining (a pretty good one) and a grand total of ... none listed for becoming an alchy.

Most potions cost less on the AH than the cost of the herbs that go into them. Pick flowers, sell flowers, buy pots => PROFIT.

If you're going alchemy for transmutes or some other legitimate reason, you can always wait until you're closer to lvl 70 to powerlevel your crafting profession when you're flush with gold.

The problem with taking two gathering professions from the beginning on your first toon is that you will never fully appreciate how easy it made your game.

If you want to switch because mining is "boring" then I echo muffinyumyum's advice that you become a (dis)enchanter instead. More money than you can imagine is to be had if you follow ohmikeghod's intermittent but always valuable guidance on the subject.

My advice is to have dual gathering professions such as mining and engineering on one toon, probably your main, and have crafting professions like Alchemy and/or (dis)Enchanting on alts. You should be farming with just one toon, your most efficient moneymaker, and your alts need be no higher than level 50 to craft all the potions, etc. your main needs, and can disenchant BoE stuff from the AH (or wherever) even earlier.

Exceptions would be if you want BoP craftables on your main, like Frozen Shadowweave or Stormherald, or the ring enchants. Also note that getting certain reputation recipies might be easier for your main.

how is mining/engineering a dual-gathering profession? did you mean to say skinning?

I personally just dropped mining for herbalism, (then again I was 70 and did the 1-375 leveling in about 5-6 hours played). I have made a good amount of money with herbalism now and I can easily afford my pots/flasks/etc for raiding.

Zapthrottle Mote Extractor. Engineering's an extremely profitable gathering profession right now, and will be at least until WotLK comes out.

OK, I'll buy that, but NOT AT LEVEL 34, which is what the OP said. Perhaps if you learned to understand what was written, you'd be able to provide answers that are relevant to the original poster instead of to you. So tell us again - exactly how is mining/engineering a dual gathering profession at level 34?

The OP's question was not, "what should I be using right now", but rather, "will I be missing out on a lot of gold later". The mention of the Zapthrottle as a gathering tool at level 60+ is therefore germane to the thread. It will not make him gold now, it will make him gold later.

But between 34 and 60 (the earliest he can get get the quest), he will be a money-loser. My advise: get rich first, then go with Engineering and power-level to 305 to get the quest with stockpiled ore. Here is a guide that will be an aid in knowing what you need to obtain to level engineering.

This is good information. Guess I just want to be able to make stuff that I'll use without going broke getting it high enough level to be useful. Aren't there dailies that can net you 100g a day easy at the higher levels? I find just gathering for money boring as I always seem to have enough gold. Pretty good with the AH. Whats this mote extractor for engineering? Does it allow you to be like a miner? Thanks all!

Guess my last question is do I need to make any money off professions or will there be other avenues to have enough gold for say a epic mount?
#15 Jan 19 2008 at 2:40 PM Rating: Decent
Both questions refer to being at 70. When you hit 70, you do not get XP, you get gold. There are so many quests in Outlands, you can make 100G a day if you quest. Dailies are simply quests that you can do every day once you are qualified. Epic mount at 60 will be harder than flying mount at 70. The money is that much better after 58 in outlands.
Yes the Mote Extractor is like mining, you get motes from clouds. It is a good second activity while questing and grinding. I am a skinner so I do that when I am killing beasts. They call it Moneygrand (Nagrand) for a reason. Lots of quests and lots of things for obtaining mats. Miners like Netherstorm, good ores, motes from alot of demons and lots of quests.

both are equal. I had enough gold (from fishing) on my first toon to purchase an epic ground mount before I hit 50. Buying the standard flier was also trivial. The epic took 2 weeks to gather the gold, but I also bought my wife a ground epic mount while I was building up the 5K. There are many ways to make gold while you are leveling, and when you get to 70, only a little bit (questing) is added.
