Enchant stacking question - don't want to destroy my gear!Follow

I'm starting to level up my enchanting and I've been noticing that sometimes my enchants wipe out the properties already on the items. However I haven't been able to figure out exactly what enchants will wipe out what. I had a staff sometime back that I got from a quest and decided to add a 2handed weapon enchant, and when I did so, it pretty much ruined the staff, taking off one of the properties and making it much weaker.

For example, I have a pair of Feralfen Mystic's Handwraps
They are:
+18 Stamina
+18 Intellect
+12 Spirit
Equip: Increases damage and healing done by spells and effects by up to 20.

I haven't put any enchantments on them, this is the way they came. I'd like to enchant them for +fishing, but I'm afraid of wiping out any of the above properties.

Also, would an armor kit wipe out any of the above?

Right now I'm running around with 2 pairs of gloves one set enchanted for fishing, and these ones. I could really use the extra bag space.

Is there a definitive guide to the ins and outs of enchanting that anyone could point me in the direction of? Most of the guides I've found are "how to level" not "what not to do".

I have never known an enchant to change the innate properties put on an item by Blizzard. Putting an enchant or an armor kit on an item will remove a previous enchant or armor kit, but you will get a message warning you of this and asking if you want to continue.

You can only have one enchant on an item (there are exceptions, but not in this case). If there is already an enchant on the item, and you try to enchant it with something else (or even the same thing), a message box will pop up asking if you want to replace the previous enchant. However, enchants do not replace any stat which comes naturally on an item.

You can enchant that item with fishing skill, but if you try to enchant it again, you will be asked to replace the fishing skill.

And no, unfortunately, by-and-large, armor kits and enchants cannot co-exist on an item. You can have one or the other. If you enchant your item with fishing skill, then try to use an armor kit on it, you will be asked if you want to replace the fishing skill with the armor upgrade.

Thanks much! Not sure what went wrong with the staff. (Unless an NPC had "enchanted" it?)

I've never seen an NPC enchanted item. Perhaps you bought that item at auction and the seller already had placed an enchantment on it.

Could it be that you had put a time-limited buff on the staff, such as through a sharpening stone (made by blacksmiths) or something similar? To people who haven't seem them before, these can look like enchants.

Then when you had the staff enchanted, it was just that the buff had expired rather than the enchant removing it?
