looked around briefly but i haven't seen any definitive lists of where the smelting recipes go gray anywhere.

as for myself, i can confirm that
    smelt mithril
goes gray at mining skill 230.

it took me seventy-four ore(74; fourscore menos half a dozen) to skillup from 225 mining to 230 mining by smelting mithril. lol. seventy-lol.

kk... smelt thorium is green at 274, 83 smelt thorium's took me to 289 mining skill (still green,) with about half the ores netting the last three points there. ymmv.

Felsteel is now Green at 375. It was grey previously.

I don't think Blizzard wants you skilling up through Smelting primarily, however, they thought that if you could get a *few* skillups with smelting ores along the way, that it would help.

There were sticking points (like trying to reach 125 to mine Iron) where you'd go into new zones and not be able to mine the nodes there (Ashenvale was lousy for this, not many people have 125 Mining before Ashenvale, and Silver is MUCH too rare to skill up on).

I also remember Desolace sucking for this, too. I would see the very rare Truesilver and Gold spawns and be unable to mine them, not even close and it was so frustrating.

Also, the Transition from Fel Iron to Adamantite was especially harsh, as well. With how packed HFP is, it is very easy to get all of your HFP questing done, and still be unable to mine Adamantite, which is found in huge quantities in Zangarmarsh, Terokkar, and Nagrand. Meanwhile, Fel Iron is very scarce in these zones, the only two zones that are really any good for Fel Iron, is HFP and Shadowmoon, oddly enough. Dunno why they'd put more Fel Iron in Shadowmoon than HFP, as Shadowmoon is a much higher level zone. You'd think that Zangarmarsh should have more Fel Iron, given that they meant you to do it right after HFP... but then that's just my feelings.

Shadowmoon just has more mining nodes in general then Zangarmarsh does due to the type of zone it is.

Shadowmoon is entirely rocky and hilly with lots of places you would generally find mining nodes (and those rocky herbs like Dreaming Glory) whereas Zangarmarsh is, well, a marsh and would consequently have fewer mining nodes. The few places you do find mining nodes in Zangarmarsh are generally in the second half of the zone.

While you make a good point, I still remember seeing more Adamantite than Fel Iron, at a ratio of 5:1 in Zangarmarsh.

And Doubly So in Terokkar, plenty of potential places for spawns, most of which turn out to be Adamantite.

And I remember seeing Adamantite spawns on the Eastern Edge of Zangarmarsh, not too far from Cenarion Expedition. Yes, Adamantite. Right near the very first place you go in Zangarmarsh.

But yet, I saw a Fel Iron Deposit way over by Sporeggar, waaaay at the bottom of the lake. That was fun getting to, lol. Had to kill like 3 of those Makura or whatever those are to get to it.
