Enchanting or mining?Follow

#1 Apr 06 2008 at 5:24 AM Rating: Good
I have a 70 Priest and I have 375 tailoring and 353 enchanting. I dont use my enchanting as much as possible and being holy spec I dont farm much either. I have spent alot of time and gold on my enchanting but its been stagnant for the last year or so. Is there a chance I can make more gold with mining rather than enchanting? What do you guys suggest. Thank you.

I'd suggest mining.. on another character. Getting your enchanting to 353 is waaay too much effort to throw away. Besides, you can make a lot of money DEing cheap greens and selling the mats.

I have to agree ....

if you want gold why not get an alt and do mining and skinning , at level 10 i can make easily 10g a session , even easier if i am horde and BE as the small eggs sell for around 2g + a stack of 10 on the servers i am on , Plus the fact its a fun change from being 70 ,As you say you have made little gold from enchanting in the last year why not also think about playing the auction house , On one of the servers i am on there are a lot of badly priced items , All it takes is the addon auctioneer suite and a little time to get it up to speed and it is so easy to make a little gold.

One of my alts is a low level enchanter and as an experiment i brought almost all of the low and underpriced weapons and armour (the created items are good and plentiful at times ) using enchantrix i can see what roughly the disenchanted prices are so i tried to re-sell at those prices or slightly above , the results at least on my main server were quite good , At level 20 with selling the dusts and other stuff and the sales of the items i was making around 30g a day for around an hours study of the auction house , The exact details of how i did it would vary from each server and does need an unstable server as if the prices are high and stable it is not worth trying , For example on Killrog horde side i could not make much gold as there were few very low priced items , but most servers do get some fools selling 1g items for 10-30s all worth buying as when disenchanted they are worth a lot more ...

So your choice , Either set aside a little time each day to play the auction house or i would create an alt to mine and skin....

The reason i tried to re-sell items at least once was to give low level players a chance to get better armour or weapons , Which is something i noticed on some servers there are almost no low level items left to sell or if they are for sale are high priced and still sell fast.

Sorry for a disjointed reply but i am half asleep ....

You can make twice the gold disenchanting than you can with mining. Farm the AH for cheap greens. Use Enchantrix.

Not necessarily.
The market for enchantment mats is saturated.
*Lots* of people selling enchantment mats.

This does not mean you can't make a boatload of gold doing exactly what you just stated. But on many servers... ok on the one I am on...

Yeah I can make gold buying from AH and disenchanting.

But the margins are not so great anymore.
And often when I sell a bunch of *select item you have a lot of*,
I find the price of that selected item dropping fast.

You can make money at enchanting. Rather disenchanting.
You can make money at mining.

Whichever you like the best ... go for!

Cuz in both cases getting good gold
Will take good effort (ie quite a bit of time).

If you have 353 enchanting - DO NOT GIVE IT UP!!!! Enchanting is only stagnant if you let it be.

If you take mining, you have to go mine ore (takes much more time than DEing). Plus, you have to level it up. In that amount of time, you can make tons of money with enchanting.

Don't waste what you've already put a lot of money and effort into. Mining will not make you more money (both profs can make good cash). Mining WILL make you farm for money. Plus all that wasted time leveling it up.

Hint - go to Halaa and buy the throwing weapons from vendor. DE them. Get essences. Sell them on AH for big profit. 5 minutes = 50-80g (depending on what they DE into, and economy).

Also, get your enchanting up to 370 for the healing ring enchants. If you are Holy, you should be using enchanting all the time (even if just for yourself). For gear, oils, etc...

Personally, I have Mining and Enchanting. I make most of my money with Enchanting. Mining was good while I was leveling and questing. But once that stopped, it became a lesser profession. Farming for rep and gear is already a pain in the neck. Farming for ore too......ugh. no way.

I'm on three servers, and I'm still able to double the money I put into the AH each and every day. If the price of mats goes down, generally so does the price of those cheap greens. Doubling your gold is not necessarily done by restricting yourself to high-level mats, some of which may be over saturated. An example for one server I'm on is vision dust. I change the settings on Enchantrix to exclude vision dust, and still get lots of other mats that have not been oversold.

So you make good gold on each and every server?
About how much is your daily profit on each (and how much time does it take to get your items/disenchant/put on AH)

Also... do you bid on items (subject to being overbid)
or only buy buyout prices?

I agree totally with the comment about not restricting yourself to highend items. A good chunk of my profit was selling strange dust.

Yes.

I make about 2-400G for a 1-hour session on two of the servers. On the third, server, my disenchanter is just starting out, so she only has about 40 Gold at the moment. She's currently only buying low-level items, since her enchanting skill is only 150. Her AH process lasts less than 1/2 hour.

Yes, but I don't use the default bid prices. I put in bids of HSP divided by 2 (or close to it - I don't spend a lot of time figuring out the exact amount). Because I raise the bar on bids, I get a lot of items that way. I also have the satisfaction of knowing that if the item is outbid by a disenchanter, he will be making less profit than I will, and if it's bought by a non-disenchanter, it's probably because either the item was way underpriced to begin with (bought by someone playing the AH), or purchased by someone who genuinely needed it.

This is so true. I remember getting stuck and cranky when the economy shifted, and I wasn't making as much of a profit DEing items. The green items on the AH cost more than the dust & essences. Then, I FINALLY decided to check some lower level stuff. BOOM!!! Big profits again.
